Mission

AlterTheater seeks to create a more just, more equitable community by: --supporting the creative growth of theater artists from historically underrepresented communities; --telling stories that reflect the full complexity and diversity of our community; and --sharing stories with our full community, in places where people are. Founded on the principles of ensemble collaboration and artistic risk, AlterTheater is also committed to new works and local artists. AlterTheater is committed to being a creative problem-solver for challenges in our community, and finding ways for theater to address the needs of our citizens. We wish to not just be a professional theater company, but to be a resident company of San Rafael.

AlterTheater Summary of Programs

Alternative Theater Ensemble's programming includes live theater productions for the general public, which include post-show discussions with members of community groups that address issues dealt with in the plays. AlterTheater also commissions, develops, and workshops new works. AlterTheater also pairs with community organizations to provide opportunities--from office internships to production assistants to mentoring--for our community's at-risk youth. During the pandemic, AlterTheater began a virtual performing arts program serving Native youth.

Centering underrepresented voices, particularly Indigenous voices, AlterLab's key program is a yearlong playwright residency program. Supporting 3-5 writers/year, AlterLab is a playwright-empowered residency that asks writers to self-identify a creative risk they'd like to take with their work, write a new play over the course of the residency, and support their fellow writers. About 75% of AlterLab plays go on to a full production at AlterTheater. So far, 80% of AlterLab writers have been women, and 2/3 identify as writers of color.
