Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Pancreatic Cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., killing more people than breast cancer. It is predicted to become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States around 2020, second only to lung cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose, mainly because there are no "definitive" symptoms, no regular tests to screen for the disease, and also because standard tests often return negative results.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Monthly Support Group Meeting
We also host a monthly support group meeting, providing hope and help for patients and their families impacted by pancreatic cancer.
Yearly Lecture Symposium
A yearly symposium headlined by nationally recognized leaders in the field of pancreatic cancer, which is open to the public.

The largest annual fundraiser for the Kosten Foundation. It consists of a 5K run, a one-mile family walk, food, live entertainment, team photos, a survivor ceremony and an awards ceremony.
Purple Night
In early fall, the University of Tennessee Health
Science Center Pancreatic Cancer Research Team
and the Kosten Foundation host Purple Night at
the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Purple Night gives individuals the opportunity
to meet the UTHSC pancreatic cancer research
team, learn what they are working on, and hear
about advancements that have been made to help
fight this disease.
Tribute at Twilight
For Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in
November, the Kosten Foundation is proud to host
the Tribute at Twilight. The event is for survivors of
pancreatic cancer, Kosten support group members,
and those who have lost loved ones to the disease.
Participants celebrate and pay tribute with a balloon

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We seek to provide an informative, compassionate and human approach toward improving the quality of life for those afflicted with pancreatic cancer and their families. Further, through research efforts, it is our passion to find a path to the early diagnosis and cure of pancreatic cancer in our lifetimes.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We host a very active monthly support group meeting for patients, their families, and anyone interested in learning more about pancreatic cancer. In 2011 we held our first Kick It 5K run/walk. The annual signature event has grown to include more than 2,500 participants. Money raised from the Kick It 5K and other Kosten Foundation events helps fund pancreatic cancer research and support fellowship training for future pancreatic cancer surgeons at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. In addition, we present a yearly symposium headlined by nationally recognized leaders in the field of pancreatic cancer.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a committed group of leaders, volunteers and supporters who are constantly evaluating our programs, our marketing, and our results to see where we have opportunities for improvement. Our group is well-rounded, including individuals from many different backgrounds and professions, so everyone brings something different to the table, whether it is as a legal professional, salesperson, marketing professional, caregiver, survivor, banker, scientist, activist, and more.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
To date, we have raised over $1,500,000 for pancreatic cancer research. In 2016, we established the Dermon II Family and Herb Kosten Foundation Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund research lab at University of Tennessee Health Science Center, which is used exclusively for the research of pancreatic cancer. Our annual Kick It 5K has grown to include more than 2,500 participants each year. In 2017 we initiated a very successful public awareness campaign in November for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
We will continue to grow our support group, reaching out to connect with individuals who may not be able to attend a meeting by providing the opportunity to join remotely via video conference. We will expand the November awareness initiative each year to continue to raise awareness, both locally and nationally. We are working to engage a broader base of the population to advocate for increased funding on a local regional and national basis. We are always refining and improving our Kick it 5k and donor communications to increase awareness, participation, and fundraising efforts.
