Mission

Heads Up! Hartford is a week long summer service camp (with touch points throughout the year) uniting urban and suburban youth to improve our communities. Our three-part mission is to: • Promote diversity • Develop collaborative leaders, and • Provide community service to Hartford, CT and its surrounding communities. Encouraging community service at a young age fosters ongoing community engagement as an adult and enables thriving communities. Studies show that to create positive, sustainable change in our complex world, we need collaborative leaders who value diversity, inclusion, and teamwork.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Promoting Diversity
As a part of Heads Up! Hartford, campers spend time with individuals who have had a variety of experiences and come from differing backgrounds. We believe that promoting diversity helps us all to grow, learn, and become better contributors to our society.

Developing Leaders
Studies show that to create positive, sustainable change in our complex world, we need collaborative leaders who value diversity, inclusion, and teamwork. Developing leadership skills at Heads Up! Hartford happens naturally through the program. Campers are given the opportunity to reach their full potential and over time take leadership roles in planning for and running the camp.

Strengthening Our Community
Giving back to the communities in and around Hartford, Connecticut is an essential mission of Heads Up! Hartford. We believe that encouraging community service at a young age fosters ongoing community engagement as an adult and enables thriving communities.

We bring youth together for one week each summer to perform community service for nonprofits in and around Hartford, CT. Teams of youth, accompanied by adult counselors, work each day. At night, all teams unite for dinner and various evening programs that provide opportunities for bonding and self-reflection.

Our camp has been in operation for 15 years. We have more than 50 adult volunteers that work throughout the year to plan the camp program each year. We also have numerous nonprofit partners in the community that provide our youth teams with opportunities for service work. Lastly, we have the support of philanthropic organizations, corporate sponsors, and individual donors who provide us with the funds needed to operate the camp.

We have enabled youth to grow as leaders who value diversity and inclusion. We have watched as many of our campers have gone on to public service related careers and have been told that their experience at our camp has positively influenced them in this decision.
