Overcoming Family Challenges: Support Group for LGBTQIA & BIPOC Students

In collaboration with the Sexual Assault Response Prevention (SARP) Team and the Queer Activist Collective at Boston University, this Fall (2022) we will be hosting an in-person support group for undergraduate and graduate students at Boston University who identify as LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color). The support group will provide a safe space for students to discuss estrangement concerns with family members while addressing the intersectionality of their racial and/or sexual identities. The group will be facilitated by a trained clinician.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To create a world where adults who are estranged can go on to lead fulfilling lives by supporting and empowering
those estranged from family, while focusing on enhancing social understanding and de-stigmatizing estrangement within society.

• Pillar One -Empowering members through awareness-raising & education
• Pillar Two - Supports for our members by delivering or making available services that support their social and mental health needs.
• Pillar Three includes the work towards destigmatizing estrangement in society

A small, but strong grass roots volunteer base allow us to deliver on the supports and empowerment portion of our mission-statement. However, we have limited financial capacity to roll out national or global campaigns to address societal stigma. Furthermore, we cannot provide the level of engagement we would like, at present, with our community, due to small volunteer numbers.
