Kids + Family Volunteer Projects
Did you know that the 5-13 age range is often excluded from a nonprofits in-house volunteer opportunities? Tucson Family Volunteers was created by a Tucson mom of three to take the guesswork out of identifying places to volunteer with young children.
Planting the seeds of kindness, empathy and compassion as soon as possible is key to crafting the next generation of leaders, activists, philanthropists and overall kind, caring humans. With so many nonprofits in need of volunteers and kids' natural enthusiasm for projects, Tucson Family Volunteers finds kid-friendly solutions to often large, complex societal problems like homelessness, food insecurity or displaced refugees. We do this through collaborations with nonprofits where fun, intentional and meaningful give-back projects are created for families to easily accomplish in 60-90 minutes.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Tucson Family Volunteers collaborates with Tucson-area nonprofits to develop family-friendly give-back opportunities for children ages 5 and up. They believe that kids are never too young to volunteer. Planting the seeds of kindness, empathy and compassion as soon as possible is key to crafting the next generation of community leaders and creating a less self-absorbed society.
With so many nonprofits in need of volunteers and kids' natural enthusiasm for projects, Tucson Family Volunteers finds kid-friendly solutions to often large, complex societal problems, specifically:
homelessness/food insecurity environment/sustainability community beautification arts and culture community health and wellbeing awareness and empathy
We do this through collaborations with local nonprofits where fun, intentional and meaningful give-back projects are created for families to easily accomplish in 60-90 minutes. Their programs are designed with the busy family in mind, offering at-home opportunities to volunteer from home as well as in-person volunteer projects, which are primarily held at the benefiting nonprofit's space so that Kid Volunteers can understand who they are helping and why their work matters. This also exposes Tucson's many nonprofits to an untapped donor: families.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
- Continue to expand and develop our family volunteer calendar so that more families can participate in our projects;
- Create opportunities for Adults/Parents/Responsible Teens to lead in-person projects so that we can offer more volunteer projects at more times;
- Develop a program for custom volunteer projects, specifically for groups;
- Develop a pipeline of funders to hire program development staff.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
- We continue to focus on community collaborations that believe, like us, in the power of youth volunteering and continue to become more strategic in which family volunteer projects we offer Tucson families;
- We provide hands-on training for Adults/Parents Volunteer Project Leaders as well as recognize their commitment with a gift card token of appreciation;
- We have created curriculums for group volunteer programming.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Throughout 2023, we successfully launched a Parent/Adult Volunteer Project Leader program where parents lead our in-person family volunteer projects. We now have 5+ committed, dedicated and reliable Parent/Adult Project Leaders to lead our projects. This has enabled a greater focus on organizational growth with volunteers leading the programs.
