What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Service Dog Sponsorship
From completing daily tasks to detecting seizures before they happen, service dogs prove they truly are man’s best friend.
There are many different types of service dogs, but the more popular ones include:
Guide Dogs
Hearing Dogs
Seizure Alert Dogs
Diabetic Alert Dogs
Mobility Dogs
PTSD Dogs
Literacy Outreach
Books, Books, Books!
Sophia Sunshine collects new children’s books every day for distribution to children in need, children in difficult situations- being a witness in court, being in a homeless family, a parent battling addiction, missing a parent due to incarceration and to angelic children in hospice- so their parents/loved ones can read to them.
Please send children's books donations by mail, bring to any Sophia Sunshine fundraiser event, and/or drop off in a Sophia Sunshine Book Drop box!
Equine Therapy
Equine therapy, also known as Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT), is a treatment that includes equine activities and/or an equine environment in order to promote physical, occupational, and emotional growth in persons suffering from various health problems. Equine therapy can help the individual build emotional awareness, social skills, impulse control, confidence, trust and empathy and strengthen problem solving skills.
Horses have become popular to use in animal therapy because they give immediate feedback to the handler or rider’s actions. Since horses have similar behavior with humans, such as social and responsive behaviors, it is easy for the patients to create a connection with the horse.
Research Towards A Cure For DIPG
Sophia Sunshine supports research towards a cure for DIPG.
DIPG is a horrific diagnosis that no child, no family, should ever have to know.
Since DIPG is such a rare form of pediatric brain cancer, little is actually known about it. Funds for more scientific research are needed.
Childhood Cancer research receives just 4% of the annual budget from the National Institutes of Health.
Now imagine how little goes towards DIPG. We need your help.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Sophia Sunshine Foundation is determined to grow, expand the scale and or increase access to our existing programs and services listed below.
To bring joy and connectivity to children facing adversity and the angelic children in hospice through Sophia’s literacy outreach program so their loved ones may read to them.
To bring joy and connectivity through animal therapy (specifically horses and dogs) to children facing adversity, especially pediatric cancer, through Sophia’s Equine Therapy and service dog sponsorship program
To raise awareness and funds for research towards a cure for DIPG- a terminal, very rare form of pediatric brain cancer. To be able to give families some hope if their child is diagnosed. This goal reflects our commitment to further our advocacy work for The Sophia Sunshine Foundation and this specific cause area.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Board of The Sophia Sunshine Foundation is also externally focused to mobilize our mission. Through our continued efforts of:
-Engaging in strategic partnerships with other nonprofit, public and or private sector organizations
-Engaging in thought leadership activities such as webinars, presenting in meetings, conferences, publishing our research, metrics and community feedback
-Community building, training, awareness, organizing and voluntarism
-Participating in networks or collective impact efforts to develop shared goals across multiple organizations
-Continued efforts to raise awareness of our mission and cause through marketing, social media and fundraising.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We believe that through strong leadership, our dedicated Board, smart event planning, creating awareness and in serving others, we are fully capable of working towards meeting our goals.
