Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
HANA is currently raising funds and researching pedigrees to collect genetic samples from a diverse selection of Hokkaido Ken across the world in order to study the genetic markers and diversity of the breed through UC Davis Veterinary Genetic Laboratory. This will help inform breeders and fanciers about the health of the breed as a whole as well as making more informed breeding decisions for specific individuals used in breed conservation to keep the breed as numerous and diverse as possible for future generations.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have already made the necessary first steps with VGL and BetterBred, and recieved a grant from Good Dog for part of the funding. The biggest challenge is funding and finding dogs that are as unrelated to the rest of the sample group as possible. HANA is actively networking with breeders in Europe and Japan to find willing, viable participants in the study. We will also begin holding fundraisers and asking for donations through Amazon Smile and Facebook to fund the research.
