What we aim to solve
We find ourselves in an era where fact-based journalism is under attack and people across the United States lack consistent access to balanced information and media platforms where their voices and ideas can be shared. Entire communities are being marginalized and misrepresented.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We hope to create a culture of optimism, gratitude, connection and empowerment. Every day KRCL amplifies the voices of musicians, artists, activists, advocates and everyday people who are working to make Utah a more vibrant, positive and inclusive place to live. As a community radio station founded in 1979, KRCL's mission is to provide information about local programs, events, services and resources relevant to underserved communities as well as a hand-curated mix of diverse music programmed by volunteer hosts and station staff.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
KRCL's daily public affairs program, RadioActive, invites listeners to not only participate in conversations with people who are civically engaged - but to become active in their own communities by attending council meetings, debates, rallies and connecting with their neighbors in meaningful ways.
The station also fosters appreciation of Utah's local music and arts scene through its diverse music programming along with collaborations with Utah concert venues, live in-studio sessions with local bands and in-kind sponsorship of lectures, festivals and community gatherings. In 2018, KRCL sponsored dozens of events and programs, including the University of Utah's Red Butte Garden Outdoor Concert Series, World Refugee Day, Utah Pacific Islanders Month, the Utah Arts Festival, the PRIDE Festival , the Living Traditions Festival and Equality Utah's annual fundraising gala.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
KRCL relies on its 60,000 weekly listeners and a generous community of local businesses, foundations and cultural organizations to serve people across Utah through multiple platforms: FM broadcast, online streaming and our mobile app. As a 40-year old institution in Utah, KRCL's stewards have dedicated their work to helping to build a brand recognized by people from a diversity of age ranges and social and cultural backgrounds. It's through strategic partnerships and decades-long relationships that KRCL is able to experiment and evolve.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
KRCL will celebrate 40 years of broadcast in 2019. We'll also wrap-up a space needs study with a local architecture firm that will allow us to create a long-term vision for KRCL's building. It's our hope to enhance our everyday visibility and to nurture the many relationships we've created over the past 40 years.
In 2018 KRCL organized a rally at the Utah State Capitol on International Women's Day featuring live music by Lucius, we provided school supplies and electronics for hundreds of kids in need as they headed back to school, we helped share the vision of the national Poor People's Campaign through a screening of the MLK documentary "King of the Wilderness," and we won the Best Radio Station award by readers of Salt Lake City Weekly (weekly news and information publication).
In addition, we provided in-kind on-air promotion for dozens of non-profits throughout Utah and helped spread the word about local concerts, lectures, rallies and festivals. We're investing in equipment and fundraising resources so that we can maximize our public service efforts. The future is looking bright, and we're grateful for all of the support we receive.
