Bridging the Academy, Church, and Community

LOS ANGELES, CA   |  www.isaacweb.org

Mission

ISAAC exists “to grow culturally-rooted spiritual leaders for community transformation.” By bridging the church and academy with 3Ts (Transcribe, Translate, Transmit) method, we honor leadership legacies of the past and present, and mentor the next generations. ISAAC collaborates with the leaders of the church, academy, and business communities from a 3rd learning space-- interdependent, intersectional, and interdisciplinary.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

"Imagining A More Equal Pulpit" funded by Louisville Institute

Despite several waves of feminism and more recent discourses on postcolonial and eco-feminism in academia, male dominance of pulpits on Sunday persists. Thus, today’s Asian American and Latino/a churches remain largely patriarchal in structure and theological orientation. Moreover, on the rare occasions that women clergy are hired, they are paid less than their male counterparts. This results in the continued silencing of women’s voices, despite their numerical majority in the church. Church women who internalize patriarchal culture gladly remain pew sitters, while many who desire gender equity exit the church due to perceived irrelevance; this is especially true of younger women and men. The rise of the “dones” and “nones” (Pew) will continue to have an effect on the socio-political fabric of the United States. We contend that the male gendered pulpit reinforces patriarchal culture and contributes to the loss of congregational vitality. We seek to investigate this phenomenon more fully, and help to transform it toward a fuller expression of the body of Christ. Tackling the problem of male gendered pulpits and implementing transformation require ecumenical team efforts. Therefore, we have assembled a mixed-gendered team that intersects the realms of the academy, the pulpit, and church from Asian American and Latino/a communities.

As AAPI women and Latina faith leaders are particularly vulnerable to obstacles in ministerial leadership and racism, bringing both awareness of these issues to the forefront and then providing the practical, skills-based training for women to excel in leadership is needed more than ever. The main goal of the program is to build up the participants' financial and business competencies to implement their passion and calling. In the cohort, we line up experts in the field to present their knowledge, including financial competency, fund development, development of a business plan and case statement, and how to develop and write compelling grant proposals. The desired outcome is that the women will develop greater self-confidence as well as the practical skills they need to pursue and lead within their chosen callings.
