What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Only about 1/3 of Americans have completed an advance directive that both assigns a surrogate decision maker and describes the health care treatment they prefer to receive/not receive should they be unable to make their own decisions or speak for themselves. Advance directives give guidance to doctors and health care surrogates, provide clarity and closure to loved ones, prevent conflict or disagreements among family members, and limit the emotional burden on loved ones. To identify the kind of care you would like, you must be aware of and fully understand your treatment and care options. In New Mexico, end-of-life options recently expanded to include the option of medical aid in dying. New Mexicans who may want this option need to be aware of the new law (enacted 6/18/21), know who's eligible and how to access it. Through outreach, education and 1:1 support, EOLONM aims to support New Mexicans to choose their end-of-life options consistent with their own values and priorities.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Client support

We provide 1:1 support to individuals and families who request assistance via telephone and email. Trained client support volunteers assist clients with their end-of-life questions and link them with needed information, resources, and care. This includes informing them of their right to choose from the full range of end-of-life care options, including the legal option in New Mexico of medical aid in dying.

Population(s) Served

We conduct public outreach and education statewide to inform individuals, families and all New Mexican's about the importance of advance healthcare planning and understanding all the options available to them at the end-of-life, including the legal option of medical aid in dying in New Mexico.

Population(s) Served

We conduct outreach and education to New Mexico clinicians, providing them information about the newly passed (2021) medical aid in dying law and other end of life options. This educational work includes informing clinicians about the provision of and eligibility for the law, their responsibilities under the law, and how to assist their patients in accessing medical aid in dying or other end of life healthcare services.
