What we aim to solve
To provide education to anyone thinking of breeding a dog in hopes they will choose to do the proper health & genetic testing prior to breeding and make the right choice in NOT continuing to breed the pup if they have the DM gene(s).

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Shade Out DM Foundation aims to raise awareness about DM - Degenerative Myelopathy that affects over 100 breeds of pups. We also serve as support groups for affected pup's pawrents to support and assist them as they take the 1-4 year journey with this horrid disease (we also loan wheelchairs and other mobility supplies too).
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We participate in activities to educate pup lovers and the general public on how they too can play a role in helping rid this disease in future pups. This disease is 100% preventable and with education and proper breeding wehave the ability to QUIT BREEDING the DM gene(s).
We also have set out to help educate the Veterinary community as there is a huge lack of knowledge and understanding about this disease and it is often misdiagnosed across the world. Just before the Covid shutdown, we had just attended our first veterinary conference. Many Neurologists that do know about this disease were grateful to learn that we provide a free support group that they can send their clients to for help and guidance as the Drs do not have the time to help them every step of the way as their pup faces all of the challenges thru this journey.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We host an annual RACE at your own Pace to #ShadeOutDM.

- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
