Mission

This natural burial conservation cemetery is on 56 acres of pristine upland mixed-hardwood forest located in the geographic center of Vermont, on the flanks of the third range of the Green Mountains. Vermont Forest Cemetery provides Vermonters with the option of returning their bodies naturally to the ecosystem, making burial a final act of generosity and gratitude for the land that nurtured them in life. Natural burial is both environmentally and economically sustainable. We are adjacent to a 91 acre tract of the Roxbury State Forest which helps to defragment and restore the Green Mountain Wildlife Linkage, an important wildlife corridor. Graves are sold with the option to make a tax-deductible donation to either a general fund or an assistance fund to help families with burial costs.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Vermont Forest Cemetery provides Vermonters with the option of returning their bodies naturally to the ecosystem, making burial a final act of generosity and gratitude for the land that nurtured them in life. Natural burial offers people the opportunity to slow down and be more present with the loved one after death. The body is not artificially preserved with embalming and instead is offered directly to the earth by hand, making it an active rather than a passive experience. Many have reported that they found natural burial to be moving and deeply meaningful.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Vermont Forest Cemetery

Vermont Forest Cemetery recognizes that natural burial takes community and sustains community. Our hope is for the cemetery to become a vibrant home for a rich network of engaged Vermonters. We’ve created a list of volunteers interested in leading birdwalks, walking meditation, and workshops on things like tree identification, willow casket weaving, and co-creating mourning rituals. We’ve reached out to a local farm & forest school about having activities at the cemetery as well as Vermont Technical College and The Career Center about introducing forestry students to natural burial stewardship. We’ve also begun discussions with local artists about a “residency” program where the artists would spend time in a retreat center located on the site in return for donating a work inspired by the cemetery.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

tural burial offers an innovative new conservation strategy that does not interfere with the Vermont forest economy. Natural burial helps preserve land in perpetuity without restricting access for outdoor recreation, education, or economic potential. Our intention is for Vermont Forest Cemetery to be a model of how small-scale forest conservation can contribute to the goal of conserving 50% of Vermont’s forests by 2050. Our forest management plan focuses on restoring the natural species balance and encouraging the return of healthy understory plants.

Graves are sold with the option to make a tax-deductible donation to either a general fund for the support and maintenance of the cemetery or a burial assistance fund to assist those facing economic hardship around burial costs.
