Ripples and Waves of the Haitian Revolution

Students from an in-country tech school in Haiti will be paired with US-based HBCU students to share their perspectives about these unique historic events using new metaverse storytelling tools such as world-building, augmented reality, virtual reality, and drone-based photogrammetry. The skills will be supplied by partners, equipment for a digital storytelling lab will be supplied by funders, and access to historical records that add context and grounding will be supplied by students and historians. People will learn about the systematic spread of enslavement techniques, understand that human rights are for all humans, and learn how individual efforts helped shape countries and the course of history.

Population(s) Served

Museums, galleries, libraries, private collectors and independent (including crowd-sourced) researchers will work together to identify twins, triplets and other related items. Digitizing specialists will convert scans of objects and artworks into object files (viewable in 3D). Attorneys will pave the way for the sharing of digital and physical items. As a result, more people will experience the full impact of seeing reunited items side-by-side in digital and physical displays. Conversations about what caused the separation will spark more interest in repairing torn relationships.

Population(s) Served

Completing one’s ancestry through a DNA study often leads to the desire to explore roots more fully. Unfortunately, many heritage explorers are left empty-handed and on their own once they receive their test results. This pilot will highlight one of the more popular experiences for Diaspora Blacks: virtual travel to one’s homeland. Heritage preservationists, metaverse travel companies, and on-site human tour guides will offer individualized experiences that answer core questions such as: “Where do I come from?”, “What is it like where I’m from?”, and “Am I like others?”.

Population(s) Served

Museums and digital entrepreneurs will work together to digitize and monetize artwork in respectful and equitable ways. Several approaches to sharing, attributing, and monetizing NFTs of artistic works will prepare artists, galleries and museums to participate in the metaverse. This prototype will allow people to share pieces from around the world in contexts that they curate. It will provide for introductions and narrative-based connections with other curators, friends, colleagues and the public.

Equity strategies

GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more

Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
