What we aim to solve
If food insecurity happens within the household, then it happens to cats and dogs are also affected. The USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person and animal in a household to live an active, healthy life. This can be a temporary situation for a family or can last a long time. So, what about families with cats or dogs experiencing food insecurity? According to Research Gate Study found that " food insecurity occurs when a dog or cat doesn't have access to regular food in their formative months, so they are either afraid of eating, or they eat too fast, or they hoard food. A dog or cat with food insecurity may also be scared that food will suddenly stop existing and that every meal could be their last. May individuals seek to either share their food received from food banks to prevent starvation, utilize funds from rent or utility payments to buy dog/cat food, surrender their cat or dog to a shelter, or abandon them to the streets.

We operate a supplemental food program for domestic animals. We utilize locations such as, local human food banks, social service agencies, churches, and companies to distribute free of charge dog and cat food plus supplies to the financially struggling households.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
RESCUES ON85TH. operates a supplemental food program, called the "Nutrition One" program, which distributes donated products such as cat and dog food, in addition to bedding, litter boxes, cat litter, and other goods when available to low-income households, and where (FAMs) Furry Family Members of society reside. The Nutrition One program is not meant to replace the responsibility of the care giver, but to in easing the stress of households facing food insecurities, lessen the impact of overrun animal shelters and foodbanks. Our program objectives include: 1) continue and expand partnerships with community assistance agencies; 2) recruit more volunteers to staff the pantry.
With the goal of allowing low-income pet families to keep their animals instead of giving them up, and lessening financial strains on other household cost. RESCUES ON85TH assist by giving free food to local families with pets in need.
RESCUES ON85TH works like many human pantries do. To qualify for help, they require a few specifics, like information about family size and income, along with shot records or a dog license. Based on a family's specific needs, RESCUES ON85TH will then offer supplemental necessities.
Those supplements can come in the form of food, collars, litter, food bowls, toys, vouchers to spay or neuter pets, and more. The goal is to help people through rough times and keeping cats and dogs healthy and in home instead of surrender or abandonment.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
RESCUES ON85TH is a 501 (C) (3) NPO Supplemental Nutrition Program. We are located in Birmingham, Alabama, serving Jefferson County. We utilize locations such as, local human food banks, social service agencies, churches, and companies to distribute free dog and cat food plus supplies to the financially struggling households. We network with United Way, GREATERGOODS Charities, The Birmingham Humane Society to extend our product reach. We are a volunteer-based mobile service that rely on the generous donations and support from the general public.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We network with United Way, GREATERGOODS Charities, The Birmingham Humane Society to extend our product reach. We are a volunteer-based mobile service that rely on the generous donations and support from the general public. We obtain overstocked and donated goods from across the United States from pet stores and manufacturers for pennies per pallets. We also maintain a gift registry for the public to sponsor a family in need. We fundraise to purchase these pallets and rent trucks to distribute the products free to the community in need.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
RESCUES ON85TH has distributed over #17,000 pounds of dog/cat food and 300 items which includes bedding, litter boxes, toys, clothing, blankets and more. We have collaborated with 6 foodbanks and plan on extending our reach to more foodbanks and church's. We are in the process of establishing a partnership with Meals on Wheels to assist the inbound elderly to receive services and obtain a warehouse and trucks to continue our mission. We additionally plan to offer and team with adoption agencies and spay and neuter clinics. RESCUES ON85TH looks to obtain a facility for human and dog/cat food at an all-in-one facility with window pickup.
