The mission of Charlie Mike is to save the lives of military veterans still carrying the unseen wounds of combat. What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

As technology and medical care continues to advance, we now successfully treat more wartime trauma than ever before, substantially reducing the number of fatalities. However, most of today’s post-war casualties are unseen. Mental and emotional casualties have increased significantly. Countless numbers of U.S. servicemen and women are living with internal traumas and the scars of war, and suffer in silence. When they return home, they live their own war, over and over, every day. The most devastating result of the increased wartime service is the current suicide rate among American veterans: an estimated 40 suicides every day! We lose more veterans to suicide each year, than have died over the past 20 years in the combined wars of Afghanistan and Iraq. It is simply heartbreaking. Anxiety. Depression. PTSD. Inability to sleep. Substance abuse. Trouble integrating in the workplace. Suicide. The list is endless. The challenges are real.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Canine Battle Buddies

Veterans who experience the results of combat trauma, PTSD or TBI, or who might be significantly struggling, can benefit from a well-trained, intelligent, disciplined, and loving dog – a Canine Battle Buddy.

Our Canine Battle Buddies are chosen from municipal animal shelters and other rescue organizations. They are carefully selected, evaluated, and tested for characteristics such as intelligence, motivation, temperament, food drive, motivation, and disposition.

Rescued dogs receive medical care to become or remain healthy, and have regular veterinarian visits. Potential Battle Buddies receive two to four (or more) months of training in a program we have developed to create capable, competent, and obedient companion dogs.

Like dogs, working with and around horses can be therapeutic in nature. The emotional intuitiveness and connection required to work with horses provide several emotional benefits at the same time. Horses are a mirror, and directly respond — or don’t respond — to the emotion and energy we bring to the interaction.

Working with horses will compel honest conversations with ourselves as military veterans. It will require positive energy, and putting our own anxieties, anger, and other struggles, in check. It will require a sense of calm, and require a quietness to elicit a positive response from our equine friends and companions. Over time, this practice can teach new behavior and new emotional habits, and give a real opportunity for healing.

Our equine riding and training program will be conducted at our facility in Liberty, North Carolina.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The mission of Charlie Mike is to save the lives of those still carrying the unseen wounds of combat, one veteran at a time. Our vision is to help Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors help one another “Continue the Mission of Life,” in whatever form that may be.

Charlie Mike will save lives through a multi-faceted approach to help each veteran “continue the mission,” to never quit, and to address their daily challenges. This approach is based on three pillars that focus on creating stability for each veteran we serve. The three pillars look to improve mental and emotional stability, stability in daily living, and stability by serving others. Our Canine Battle Buddy and Equine Therapy programs, and future service programs, aim to provide that stability for veterans in their personal lives, with a renewed sense of purpose.

Charlie Mike operates out of a 40+acre facility in Liberty that provides the base for our Canine Battle Buddies and Equine Therapy programs. We currently have space for eight rescue dogs at any given time. We have two full-time and one part-time dog trainers on site and a part-time equestrian instructor. This number of dog trainers ensures we can train each dog to a highly-qualified level, provide individual, one-on-one support to veterans who visit the facility for their initial training sessions with their canine battle buddy, and ongoing support post-adoption. We are growing our volunteer base to assist with administrative capacity building as well as physical upkeep of the property to maintain a high proportion of donations applied to direct programs.
