A Center for Resources...A Catalyst for Change
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The main problem we are trying to overcome is the general lack of investment in all things health and human services related.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
COW Bus
COW is an outreach service providing parenting training, early childhood education and school-readiness programs for families with young children in Storey, Lyon, and Nye counties.
This outreach program prepares pre-K students to become school ready. In 2001, over 75% of the families served by the COW Bus indicated they had gained confidence in their parenting skills and were more able to access resources in their community, including those not related to young children, as a result of their participation. The bus offers programs to approximately 250 children and families.
Before-And-After School Programs
CCI offers Before-and-After School programs for K-12 youth in partnership with the Storey County Schools. The Before- and After-School programs typically include breakfast snacks, reading, study time, social skills activities, recreation, field trips, and theme-based activities to enrich the lives of the 150-plus youth who participate annually. There are programs at the two elementary schools in Storey County.
All of the K-6 youth programs have a drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free emphasis, which is a natural outgrowth of our organizational intent: to build healthy communities.
Comstock Kids serves children K-6, and the SOARS Program serves our middle school youth.
Counseling Services
In the early 1990s, Community Chest began offering counseling to families and youth. Since then, the family advocacy program has grown to include many types of counseling services— domestic violence, substance abuse, personal and court-ordered counseling. Our counselors also work with many high school prevention programs.
The family advocates work as team leaders for CCI’s community programs. They oversee the Family Resource Center and the Comstock YouthWorks education and employment program. They also serve as advisers for the various councils, youth leadership programs, and family services for this region.
Last year, 150 families and 100 youth received counseling or family advocacy, including four anger management and conflict resolution groups held at local high schools.
The Food Closet
The food closet offers bulk and fresh food to families in this region in conjunction with the Northern Nevada Food Bank. At least 20 volunteers a month assist with these two programs, which are integral to the lives of local citizens. Since 1997, we have provided food, clothing and emergency rent and utility assistance to over 2,500 people in Storey and Lyon Counties. In 2000, the barter system generated 2,000 hours of service and $3,600 in donations. All of these programs— from counseling to the food closet, are available on a barter basis. This program enables people to utilize these services based upon their volunteer work. These volunteer hours are traded for services thus keeping the dignity of the volunteers intact, and contributing the talents of our local citizens to meet real community needs.
Adult Employment Placement Program
The employment placement program at Community Chest assists clients in all phases of the employment search, training and placement. In order to participate in the program, the client must actively engage in the following sessions and workshops: (1) initial assessment, (2) weekly check-ins, (3) monthly workshops.
Our clients are professional, dedicated, and skilled individuals looking for employment. We work closely with each client and provide continual support in their job search. This entails developing a strong and lasting support system. To participate in the program, the client needs to be proactive about their engagement with the Case Manager at Community Chest.
Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting
Nevada Families First (NFF), a Parents as Teachers™ affiliate program, is CCI's free and voluntary maternal, infant, and early childhood home visiting program. Parents as Teachers™ is a nationally-recognized, high-quality, evidence-based home visiting model that connects overburdened families with child development assistance, education, information, health and developmental screenings, and resources. The national Parents as Teachers™ vision is “that all children will learn, grow, and develop to realize their full potential.”
During the home visit, the Parent Educator provides information about issues such as feeding, safe sleep practices, nutrition, bonding and attachment; and activities that can stimulate a child’s mind and growth. Health issues are addressed which may include smoking cessation, postpartum depression, health insurance and the importance of finding a regular health care provider. The Parent Educator can also provide education and support for breastfeeding mothers, screenings for potential health or social needs, and help get families connected to services from government agencies and/or community-based organizations.
GAME Program (Out-of-School Youth)
The GAME (Guidance through Academics, Mentoring, & Employment) program serves the education and employment training needs of out-of-school young adults ages 18-24 in Lyon and Storey counties. The program works in partnership with a variety of organizations and employers in Storey and Lyon counties to train and retain our young adults.
Program benefits include:
Individualized instruction, employment skills training, and peer mentoring
Academic classes and life skills
Group centered approach
Employer/supervisor, and fellow employees as coaches while learning real skills
