Financial Assistance -
Receiving a diagnosis of heart disease can be devastating to a family and take a financial toll. Extended hospital stays for the heart patient and time away from work for one, or both parents can put a stressful strain on the family budget. Children's Heart Foundation helps in a new diagnosis or crisis by assisting families to pay for living expenses such as rent, utilities, food, travel expenses, and medical costs such as prescriptions. Las Vegas is home to the only full-service Pediatric Cardiology Center in Nevada; therefore, families living outside of Las Vegas can experience excessive travel costs. Children's Heart Foundation can help arrange airfare and ground travel to Las Vegas and taxi vouchers while staying in Las Vegas.
Camp Mend-a-Heart is a cost-free, medically supervised camp for children born with or develop heart problems. Our camp program allows heart kids located within Nevada to bond and establishes a network of support and understanding for each other. Camp Mend-a-Heart is dedicated to providing programs for children living with heart disease and offers a camping experience with a ropes course, trust-building exercises, arts and crafts, water games, and many other recreational activities and programs offered with a traditional summer camp program. Children with a heart condition live their lives, knowing that they are at a high-risk for mortality. The goal of the camp program is to provide heart kids with a carefree environment where they can spread their wings, foster independence, and enjoy a summertime experience by being a kid.
Smart Heart Scholarship Program -
Since 2008, Children's Heart Foundation offers two $3,000 scholarships each year for heart kids continuing their education after high school. All college or trade school-bound heart patients are encouraged to apply.
Holiday Assistance -
Children's Heart Foundation offers assistance to heart families in need during the holiday season. Each Christmas, the foundation reaches out to more than 35 heart families with clothes, food, necessities, and gifts for the families that we serve. Also, the Children's Heart Foundation will provide families with grocery store gift cards for Thanksgiving.
Pediatric Heart Conference -
One of the goals of the Children's Heart Foundation is to educate healthcare professionals on pediatric cardiology issues. The purpose of the Pediatric Heart Conference is to update physicians, mid-level practitioners, nurses, and other health care professionals on the history as well as recent advances in the field of pediatric cardiology.
Family Counseling -
A heart condition can be shocking to parents and siblings. Often insurance does not cover the cost for counseling, so the Children's Heart Foundation can arrange free sessions with a psychologist where one or more family members can discuss their situation.
Heart & Soul Discussion Group -
Families need to gather together to share their experiences and talk. Children's Heart Foundation hosts a discussion/support hour for parents at Children's Heart Center on the 4th floor the second Friday of each month.
Family to Family Connection -
For some families, it's essential to speak individually with a family who can share their similar experiences. Children's Heart Foundation connects these families with our heart parent board members to offer emotional support above and beyond counseling and discussion groups.
