Mission

Our mission is to guide youth through challenging outdoor adventures so they can prove to themselves that they can do hard things in life. These adventures build their self-efficacy, self-determination, and resilience as character strengths.

Notes from the nonprofit

Summit Journeys strives to provide equitable access to disadvantaged, at-risk, and under-served youth and individuals. To date we have led over 170 outdoor adventure trips with 2100 youth from the Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, and Weber County as well as surrounding areas. Many of these youth come from our 20+ partnerships with youth service organizations like Neighborhood House, Boys and Girls Clubs, and YMCA. In addition, we frequently work with schools, and various youth therapeutic programs such as Alpine Academy and Wasatch Recovery. We also partner with Dahlia’s Hope (services for survivors of trafficking) and the University of Utah Burn Unit. We are deeply inspired from the feedback we receive from our most vulnerable participants. Our desire, with your support, is to expand our reach to those who can benefit most from our services. We recognize the great need the upcoming generation has to build character and resilience that will enable them to overcome their varied life challenges.

Summit Journeys

At Summit Journeys, our mission is to harness the transformative power of outdoor adventure to empower and guide youth and young adults. These adventures build their self-efficacy, self-determination, and resilience as character strengths. We also improve their well-being by getting them off of their phones and enable them to make real connections with their teammates and with nature. Through our adventures, we strive to foster their ability to embrace uncertainty, strengthen their determination to overcome challenges, and build resilience that will serve them throughout their lives. Our outdoor experiences typically include adventures like kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, sailing, fishing, mountain biking, camping, and backpacking, etc

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
