Mission

S.E.E. to A.C.T. empowers at-risk youth in rural and under served communities through storytelling and education and self-expression while preserving, developing, and promoting their unique cultural heritage. Understanding leads to increased positive educational and social outcomes for young individuals.

Notes from the nonprofit

Being intimately involved with filmmaking for so many years (40 years), I particularly understand the importance of it as a means for not only creative expression, but also it is one of the most unique industries which brings a huge display of skill sets under one roof (left and right brain), from the writer, the director, the producer, the manager, the coordinator, the camera man, the actor, the cinematographer, the electrician, visual effects, sound, grip, the editor, the distributor, and the art department itself, which is filled with a wide and diverse array of skilled and talented craqsmen and designers. Understanding the dynamics of a film production is what I teach to these wonderful kids.

Teaching to Empower

SEE to ACT, committed to empower young minds with a creative and collaborative outlet, is providing film-making education, as part of a new pilot project. Students learn life skills and gain confidence as they go through the entire process of creating a short film, whether its a music video, or a short narrative, experimental or documentary film. Making a film is a multi-disciplinary field and requires an array of life skills, such as organizing, managing, conceptualizing, familiarity with equipment, understanding visual composition, editing, distribution, marketing and most importantly collaboration. Not only is film-making a means to sustain and re-invigorate a culture by re-introducing storytelling and traditions, but it is also a group and collaborative activity, which demands that all people involved in production work together towards a single vision of the creative work, which is typically under the guidance of the director and executive producer.

The major outcome we’re looking to achieve is lowering the attrition rate in schools by keeping students engaged and interested through creative self-expression such as filmmaking, music, dance and traditional oral storytelling. Keeping students engaged will help them develop important life skills, such team work, collaboration, organizational skills, self expression, problem solving and help cut down on absenteeism, therefore help them graduate in a timely manner.

We propose to provide Group Experiential Education, also defined or referred to as learning through reflection, along with Project Based Learning. Because film is the audiovisual version of storytelling, it can enhance emotions and therefore set the foundation for expressing feelings and conveying concepts. Learning through film offers a special environment for fostering open-hearted discussions and we provide the tools and the platforms for students to be heard. We will help them work peer to peer and to build trust through learning and collaboration, which will have a positive ripple effect on building community. Other outcome would include teamwork, collaboration, autonomy.

  • Who are the people you serve with your mission?

    Evaluation it will provide the basis for continuous improvement and responsiveness to the needs of our students, our professional educators and our donors. The structure for the proposed program will incorporate accountability by means of an external evaluation system that ensures that all activities are reviewed regularly and thoroughly for quality and success of content, as well as efficient use of personnel and other resources. Evaluation will include both quantitative and qualitative assessments in order to measure the success of each activity, identify strengths and challenges, and determine ways to maintain and increase efficacy. Because each class is project based, each group of students will work towards accomplishing project
