Hand Up Network
Everyone needs a Hand Up, Some Need it Now!
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The Hand Up Network provides a “Hand Up” and avoids the traditional response of a “Hand Out”. We focus our efforts on developing programs to encourage, equip and empower those who want, and are willing, to change their circumstances. These people need a “Hand Up” and an opportunity to overcome a tough season of life.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Employment Counseling
There can be many barriers working against a client to gain and keep meaningful employment. Lack of a recognized ID, Resume, Skills, Education, Training, as well as knowing what it takes to be a good employee etc. are many of the issues we see and address. Further, our clients often don’t know how to apply their gifts and skills to their vocational options. We help clients identify their skills and abilities, translate these skills into career choices and help them to reach for these careers through workshops, training, education (including ESL), apprenticeships and other program options. Hand Up Network programs seek to address many basic employment-related issues prior to applying for a job and support the client in becoming an appealing candidate to the employer.
Victim Services
The Victim Services Team comes alongside Law Enforcement, Medical Organizations, and Judicial Leadership to provide support for Victims of Sexual Assault, Domestic Abuse, Human Trafficking, Homicide, Suicide, Stalking, and Elderly Abuse.
The secret of quality of life in East Texas is becoming more known to the rest of the country and with it comes issues that were not as prevalent in this region just a few decades ago. The presence of Interstate 20 bisecting East Texas has also brought forth major issues related to Human Trafficking, Sexual Assault, and Violence. In Smith County, the most populated of East Texas Counties, approximately 5,680 major crimes were committed in 2018 according to the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Crime Report (TCR). These crimes included murder, sexual assault, burglary, larceny, and auto theft. On average, only 1,456 resulted in arrest. The average number of victims affected in each of these cases is three (3), including children.
Based on this average, approximately 17,000 citizens of Smith County were left to deal with the after effects of victimization. While we have come a long way in research, there is a significant gap between funding and the demand for services to meet the needs of our victims. Primary and secondary victims are often left alone, isolated, and without the physical and emotional support needed to mitigate through the long-lasting effects of devastating and traumatic events. This can result in feelings of helplessness and isolation. Victims can become overwhelmed and avoid dealing with the investigation and prosecution phases of the criminal justice system. As victims courageously step forward to seek services from within our community, we must be ready to meet their needs.
Response Teams
The HandUp Network offers a variety of volunteer service opportunities through our HandUp Response Teams (HURTeams). HURTeams augment many of our field services and are made up of groups sponsored by a single organizational partner covering (such as a church or non-profit organization) or groups of individuals with a common desire to serve the needs of HandUp Network, but not necessarily serving as part of a ‘sponsored’ partner team. These teams come together on the field, are led by a HandUp Network-trained team leader in the specific activities tasks such as Community Outreach, Community Service or Disaster Response.
Mentoring
Mentoring Programs within the Hand Up Network are the core of our operations. They seek to address issues, qualifications, and components that will help the client take control of their life, build a foundation for long-term sustainability and re-engage with society from a place of strength. The menu of programs will always be in flux based on the needs of our Clients. There are also programs that are always going to be key foundational needs that most who travel through the Network will need.
Retail Training Center
Employment opportunities exist within the Retail Industry. Employers are always searching for quality personnel that have the skill, work ethic, and basic understanding of how the retail industry operates. The Hand Up Network Retail Training Center utilizes our own retail center as a training platform to help our clients fill these career opportunities by providing training in areas such as: inventory control and logistics, sales and customer service, display presentations, retail floor design, etc. Additional workshops in Resumes, Interviewing, Workplace Etiquette and other employment skills help prepare clients to be successful in the industry.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
What we do:
• Invest time and resources in those wanting to improve their lives and circumstances
• Refer those with survival issues or specialized needs to Partner Agencies
• Provide supportive, “whole-person” programs focused on practical, physical, and spiritual well-being
• Develop partnerships with local churches, agencies, and businesses for clients, volunteers, and resources
• Coordinate service opportunities for skilled and general volunteers
• Help meet unforeseen and tragic needs after a natural disaster
Who we reach:
• Around 500 people a year who are experiencing a tough season in life
• 150-250 of those become Clients & remain in HUN programs for 2+ years
• 100+ people with survival issues, such as health needs referred to partner agencies
• 100+ Community Volunteers wanting to serve in Programs or on Projects
• 100+ Community members needing a Hand Up from a service team
• 100s of Victims of a natural disaster
• 100s of Volunteers wanting to help after a disaster
200+ Victims of assault
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Life struggles are not unique to any one part of the world, but people somtimes think things are much worse everywhere but their own back yard. Over the last couple of decades, our team has worked to lead international ministries that address needs in the developing world with significant success. That work was important and needed, but we also noticed we have similar issues at home. We began various projects in the U.S. and soon realized that these challenges were significant and needed the same focus and expertise we were providing on an international scale. We wanted to make sure that the people in the community where we live had the same opportunities to grow and achieve an improved quality of life. Enter the Hand Up Network!
We are here to provide a "Hand Up," and are intentionally avoiding the traditional "Hand Out." We focus our efforts on encouraging, equipping, and empowering those who are willing to put in the effort to change their circumstances. We are providing hope and opportunities for those in a tough season of life, acknowledging that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Each person will have a unique journey. Our goal is to build abilities and good habits that will be the foundation for long-term success.
Each person who comes through the door will meet with an intake coordinator that plants seeds of hope while focusing on their spiritual and physical well-being. During this process, we will also address any significant survival issues, including housing, food, safety, health and more (tackling survival issues prior to progressing to the Hand Up program).
The Hand Up Network is an intentional process and anyone wanting a quick “hand out” soon realizes that is not what we are all about. We welcome anyone referred from one our Network Partners or someone that just comes through the door to start their new life transforming
journey with us. The first part of welcoming someone is to get to know who they are as an individual and give them an understanding of what the Hand Up Network Programs do. We provide a holistic (spiritual, social and physical) foundation for every client.
Many that enter our doors have significant survival issues (housing, food, safety, health, etc.) that must be addressed prior to progressing further. We are intentional to speak into the lives of each person and plant a seed of hope from both a physical and spiritual perspective. Once this seed it planted, then we will ensure that each person is in position to continue to the next phase of Hand Up Network programs. A determination that someone isn’t ready to continue into the Hand Up Network Program does not mean we are giving up on the person. We will seek to provide a referral to a Partner specializing in their need… such as a Drug Rehabilitation, Mental Health, or Shelter Program. It is our stated goal to stay connected and informed, welcoming them back into our programs when they have addressed and overcome the obstacles they face.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our Leadership Team has experience in developing programs and services around the world through decades of service to areas of significant need. We began to realize that there were many issues close to home that could benefit from our expertise and we made a conscious decision to come back home and use our expertise to help in our own community.
Our methods and processes have had record results around the world and its an honor to now bring our focus back into our own neighborhoods and give hope to those around us in need. We have engaged Network Partners through defines MOU's to ensure that we are not replicating services, but working together to bring the highest level of services to those that want to help themselves get into a better place in life. Our Board of Directors has multiple areas of expertise and together we are making our partners better at what they do while engaging in our join efforts.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The sky is the limit for our organization, but we are seeing double digit increases in the success of our clients through each quarterly analysis. This means that lives are being saved and the future of those that come to us for help and put for the effort themselves are reaping substantial benefit for their efforts.
You will not get a Hand out, but will have a partner providing a Hand Up all along the way to achieve your goals.
