Education News. In context.

Mission

Chalkbeat is a nonprofit news organization committed to covering one of America’s most important stories: the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education. We are mission-driven, in that we believe that every child deserves an excellent education, and that a strong press is vital to making that happen. Yet we are also fiercely independent, in that we do not take a position on the best path for achieving equity.

What we aim to solve

Chalkbeat is a nonprofit news organization committed to covering one of America’s most important stories: the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education. We are mission-driven, in that we believe that every child deserves an excellent education, and that a strong press is vital to making that happen. Yet we are also fiercely independent, in that we do not take a position on the best path for achieving equity. Because we believe that education is fundamentally a local issue, our coverage is rooted in local communities. To date, we report from and about seven locations: Chicago, Colorado, Detroit, Indiana, Newark, New York, and Tennessee. (If you’d like to see Chalkbeat come to your community, let us know.) Read more about our history and mission here. As most local news sources shrink, creating more so-called “news deserts,” Chalkbeat is building a sustainable model that is local, substantive, and independent

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Chalkbeat's mission is to inform the decisions and actions that lead to better outcomes for children and families, especially those in the low-income communities where improvement can have the largest impact. Through unbiased reporting, our journalists help the public examine how schools are truly operating, scrutinize key policy and legislative developments that often happen behind closed doors, and gain access to important data and context that would not otherwise be made transparent. We imagine a world in which every educator, parent, and school board member who cares about educational equity can draw easily on inspiration, connection, and knowledge gained from peers in their community and across the country and from research — all told through lively, informed stories that are as fun to read as they are informative.

Chalkbeat reporting holds schools, politicians, and organizations accountable. By building communities’ understanding of the complex developments, innovations, and challenges that affect outcomes, we can improve their ability to serve students better — whether through their work as practitioners, policymakers and lawmakers, or through their democratic participation as parents, students, and voters.

Chalkbeat provides unbiased, quality information. Our reporters listen to parents, students, and educators, and communicate their needs and concerns to policy- and lawmakers, who can in turn design their efforts to be more responsive to their communities. Chalkbeat’s local-first approach and honed expertise allow us to fill a unique niche that no other news organization can. By embedding our teams in the communities they cover, we have our ears to the ground, listening to our constituents and our readers so that we are both informed by and informing their decisions. Our contextualized coverage amplifies lessons, elevates local stories and local voices (including those of parents), and builds conversations.

Chalkbeat is a fast-growing, award-winning nonprofit news organization that is seen as one of the top innovators in the future of news. The site reaches hundreds of thousands of people each month. Reporting reaches a wider audience through collaboration with national media, such as ProPublica and Box, and with prominent local media, including the Detroit Free Press, the Indianapolis Star, the Denver Post and the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. The NYT public editor recently identified Chalkbeat as a promising “lodestar in a murky media world.”

Chalkbeat’s coverage has led to measurable changes in state laws, local school district policies, and practice by educators from the principal’s office to the classroom. We’ve also covered countless local elections that stand to influence schools, ensuring that voters are armed with the news they need to make informed decisions. A few examples of our recent impact include:
The Indiana Department of Education says they will investigate allegations that many students at two troubled virtual schools never signed up for or completed classes — possibly including whether the state can recoup some of the funding it sent to the schools. The investigation is just one of many impacts stemming from a seven-month Chalkbeat investigation of poor performance at Indiana’s virtual charter schools.
In New York, Advocates for Children and a private law firm filed a legal complaint with the state education department against Success Academy and the DOE that cites our reporting, specifically that Success Academy moves students back a grade mid-year. Another lawsuit challenging Mayor Bill de Blasio's expansion of the Discovery program cites our reporting on how the program has benefitted few black and Hispanic students.
In Newark, the Education Law Center filed a formal complaint with the state regarding a uniform crackdown at Marion P. Thomas Charter School. The Education Law Center cited online news reports from Chalkbeat, and a later story from NJ.com, which further investigated the issue.
Our goal in the future is to continue to inform the decisions and actions that lead to better outcomes for children and families. We aim to continue having a measurable impact on the education debate, as well as on education decision making.
