Student Programs

FIUTS Student Programs are open to any university-level student in the Puget Sound region. Each year, more than 4,500 international and domestic students take part in opportunities to explore our communities and share experiences, take part in challenging conversations about the world around them, and build leadership skills within a global community. FIUTS Student Programs engage students as ambassadors of their own experiences and encourage exploration, service, and cultural exchange. FIUTS offers more than 120 programs each year, and also produces lectures, film-series, panels, and other events each year aimed at enhancing understanding and curiosity between local campuses and the wider community.

Started in 1949, community hosting is the cornerstone of FIUTS programs. FIUTS matches incoming students with families and individuals in the community for short-term homestays and friendship connections. These relationships often grow to become the key experience in a student’s time in the US, and many students and hosts form lifelong friendships.

In addition to a traditional Board of Trustees, FIUTS has a 17-member elected Student Board. The FIUTS Student Board coordinates several major events each year, holds six voting seats on the FIUTS Board of Trustees, and receive extensive leadership and community service volunteer experience. More than 180 students become FIUTS Facilitators each year, serving as program volunteers and mentors to other students.

In addition to school outreach programming, FIUTS coordinates overnight rural community visits to communities throughout the region as well as outreach to senior centers and other local civic groups.
