What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR)
Blue Mountain Humane Society alters, vaccinates, and returns feral and free-roaming cats trapped by volunteers and the public, drastically reducing the number of incoming strays and preventing colony overpopulation, illness, and food source competition.
Subsidized Spay/Neuter Services
To help reduce the number of stray and homeless animals in our community, Blue Mountain Humane Society provides discounted spay/neuter services for pets belonging to income-qualified pet owners.
Mama's Last Litter
Owners of a cat or dog who has had a litter of kittens or puppies can surrender the litter to Blue Mountain Humane Society. We will ensure the kittens/puppies are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. We will then adopt out the kittens/puppies to loving homes.
In addition, we will spay and vaccinate your mama cat or dog (and neuter and vaccinate dad, if available) for free.
Vaccine Clinics
Blue Mountain Humane Society provides subsidized vaccine services to income-qualified pet owners.
Temporary Emergency Animal Housing
Blue Mountain Humane Society offers free, temporary housing for pets of people who are receiving assistance at the Walla Walla YWCA or Walla Walla Christian Aid Center.
Washington State Penitentiary Dog Training
Blue Mountain Humane Society's dog training program at the Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) provides essential training and skill-building opportunities for shelter dogs and a unique opportunity for the handlers entrusted to train them.
Working Cats
Blue Mountain Humane Society takes feral or semi-feral cats that are not adoptable as house pets and adopts them out to suitable indoor/outdoor homes such as barns, warehouses, shops, garages, or vineyard properties.
Rehoming
Blue Mountain Humane Society helps pet owners needing to rehome their pet find a new home by listing the pet on our Home to Home web site and/or making an appointment to surrender the pet to the shelter to be adopted out to a loving home.

Equity strategies

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
