NAMI South King County
No one knows the stigma of mental illness.
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
NAMI South King County is a grassroots organization composed of individuals and families who are either living with a serious mental illness or have a loved one diagnosed with a serious mental illness. There is an urgent need for trained volunteers to help us share NAMI Signature Programs within the community that we serve. Training is provided by NAMI Washington.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group
NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a free, peer-led support group for adults living with mental illness. Participants will gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others, and the groups are led by NAMI-trained facilitators who've been there.
NAMI’s Support Groups are unique because they follow a structured model to ensure you and others in the group have an opportunity to be heard and to get what you need. Our groups meet on a weekly basis.
NAMI Family Support Group
NAMI Family Support Group is a free, confidential support group for loved ones of people living with mental illness. Families join a caring group of people helping one another through their learned wisdom. Families are no longer alone and have a renewed sense of hope. NAMI Family Support Group fosters group discussion and interaction. The group sessions are led by trained volunteer facilitators who have a loved one living with mental illness. Our groups meet twice monthly.
NAMI Family-to-Family Education
NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12-session education program for family, partners, friends and significant others of adults living with mental illness. The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved one living with mental illness, while maintaining their own well-being. The course includes information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other mental health conditions. Thousands of families describe the program as life-changing. The program is taught by trained teachers who are also family members and know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness.
NAMI In Our Own Voice
NAMI In Our Own Voice presentations change attitudes, assumptions and stereotypes about people with mental health conditions. These free, 40-, 60- or 90-minute presentations provide a personal perspective of mental illness, as presenters with lived experience talk openly about what it's like to live with a mental health condition.
Our trained presenters humanize the misunderstood, highly stigmatized topic of mental illness by showing that it's possible—and common—to live well with a mental health condition.
Community Speakers' Forum
Our community Speakers' Forum is a free, local outreach program from our affiliate to South King County, Washington. We invite people from the community to come and share on various topics concerning mental health with attendees.
NAMIWalks
Our affiliate participates in the annual NAMIWalks Washington fundraising event.
In 2020 our affiliate offered three free yoga classes using ZOOM to the public in lieu of our annual NAMIWalks to be in compliance due to CoViD-19.
Community Information and Referral Services
NAMI South King County provides a large amount of information every day to individuals and their families by phone and by email. We help people connect to resources, regain hope and navigate the mental health system.
