Mission

Boomtown Cafe began in 1995 as a non-profit restaurant that served affordable and nutritious food to Seattle?s homeless and low-income residents and workers. What sets Boomtown apart from other feeding programs is that Boomtown functions like a business. We are the only non-profit restaurant in the State of Washington where people can use their food stamp cards for hot food or work to pay for a portion of their meals. We believe in the opportunity for people to contribute to society and the Café provides the opportunity for an important value exchange to take place. The Café creates an atmosphere that is welcoming to diners of diverse incomes and lifestyles and provides the dignity of a restaurant meal at a very low cost. Since our closure, Boomtown has received an overwhelming outpouring of community support. In just one week, Seattle citizens came forward with donations totaling nearly $32,000 to get Boomtown up and running again. Clearly, the Seattle community knows that Boomtown is an invaluable community asset that we can?t afford to lose. Building on the momentum of these generous gifts, we are mobilizing an effort to reopen the café with vim, vigor and the tenacity. It will take many hands to sustain this wonderful community asset and we are calling on our generous supporters to help us re-open. DONATE TODAY and help us continue to remind people that everyone has VALUE, we can all make a positive CONTRIBUTION and we should all be given the opportunity to live a life of DIGNITY

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Boomtown Cafe is the only nonprofit restaurant in Seattle and Washington state serving meals to homeless and low-income individuals and their families. Those who are able to pay more are encouraged to make a donation to the Cafe. Food stamps and food vouchers are also accepted, and a work exchange system operates for those who lack funds. Before the closure in 2005, Boomtown was open 5 days a week and served between 300 and 400 meals each day; on a typical day, 80% of meals were purchased with work exchange labor. As we move in to 2007, Boomtown has created a newly focused business plan that creates a stronger emphasis in sustainability and customer involvement. Boomtown has created a new fundraising program that also responds to panhandling, CANhandling with Boomtown Bucks. Each Boomtown Buck that is sold will help pay for the cost of food. The board is currently working on relocating and we hope to secure a future home in the near future, so that we can move back to serving the public 5 days a week.

When Boomtown reopens 5 days a week we will bring back our Employment Opportunities Program, which provides work skills and on-the-job training to chronically unemployed individuals and helps participants who successfully complete the program to find full-time jobs, housing or social service support.
