Notes from the nonprofit

MGFTC assists in funding the activities of the Washington State University Master Gardener and the Thurston County Master Recycler Composter programs. In 2019, through a variety of fundraisers $71,940 was raised that supported: * Training and certification of 38 new MGs and 21 MRCs * 851 youth learned gardening and composting skills from our volunteers * 3,201 adults attend 78 presentations conducted by our volunteers * 177 MGs and 41 MRCs donated more than 20,014 service hours to Thurston County activities * Clinic volunteers hosted 140 Question and Answer clinics to respond to 8,707 community inquiries regarding gardening, recycling and composting * Children and volunteers grew and donated 2,200 pounds of produce to the local food bank In 2020 - 2021, due to COVID, our programs were severely restricted. We are resuming more activities in 2022 as guidelines permit and look forward to re-establishing a full program in the future.

Diagnostic Plant Clinics and Demonstration Gardens

MGFTC supports plant clinics where trained and certified Washington State University Master Gardeners answer questions from the public about home horticulture. Our three demonstration gardens employ an effective "show and tell" approach to learning. Funds raised help to finance programs that train and certify Master Gardeners and Master Recycler Composters who provide information and outreach at community events.

Policies and processes
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
