Mission

Velocity is Seattle's premier art center dedicated to contemporary dance and performance. Everyday we support and advance artists and emerging ideas through commissioning, presenting, residencies, creative exchange and access to space, funding, scholarships, employment and touring opportunities. Provide quality movement education to dancers from beginners to professional, in a broad range of movement styles. Produce programs that introduce audiences to a wide spectrum of contemporary dance practices and aesthetics and bring together regional talent and world class innovators. Provide outreach and humanities programs that engage minds and inspire participation, while promoting cross-disciplinary dialog and meaningful links between artists and the community.

Program 1

Summer Festivals - Velocity's Summer Festivals (Strictly Seattle and Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation) are yearly festivals which attract participants from all over the United States. In 2020 Velocitys impactful summer programming pivoted online to reach people where they are. Notable projects in the 2020 festival include Rosy Simas free rest and recovery intensive for BIPOC artists, Physical Educations online book club, Karen Nelsons online Tuning Scores and a new collaborative online intensive with Morgan Throson and Fox Whitney. The festival attracted 2,554 participants from around the world, through over 150 classes and events.

Fall Kick-off + Velocity Visioning Think Tank - Velocitys Fall Kick-off is a yearly program that welcomes the community back in the fall. This year, programming was centered on two initiatives: Cultivating Care and the Velocity Visioning Think Tank. Cultivating Care was an expansive online discussion and resource-sharing project curated by the artist HATLO featuring 18 Seattle-based artists. Offerings included classes, online streamed performances, and discussions for over 7,000 audience members. The Think Tank process was a visioning workshop with eight artists that launched Velocitys revisioning and strategic planning process which will culminate in a final report at the end of 2021.

Studio/Theater Operation and On-Going Classes: Velocity provides a wide variety of drop-in classes, dance series, master classes, and workshops, both for the professional dance community and the general public. Despite operating fully online last year, Velocity produced over 40 digital performances and events, sustained an ongoing schedule of over 15 weekly online dance classes, and hosted professional development and community-building programming completely online with artists in Seattle and across the country. This programming employed over 100 teachers and artists and reached 20,000+ audience members and class-takers.
