What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The pace of technological innovation and integration in today’s economy is constantly increasing, driving a need for technological literacy. The marketplace of the 21st century will be technology-driven and will add about 20 million jobs to the American economy by 2025 – if we can only educate our young people to fill them. Across the board, every industry is integrating technology into their operations, from the application process, to the most basic of job functions. The use of Microsoft Office, typing skills, and overall computer literacy has become a staple in the workplace. Additionally, job placement and promotion is determined by one’s ability to use technology. Technology has become a part of nearly every industry and thus technology skills are essential to succeed in today’s job economy. Access to a computer and the Internet is an essential piece of developing technological literacy. The most critical group to educate is youth who will be entering the workforce.

The On It Foundation has made further provisions for those families that do not qualify for a free computer, yet cannot afford to purchase one because of bad credit or little or no disposable income. The On It Foundation’s Computer Guarantee Purchase Program – Jump On It, offers those families a guaranteed way to purchase exceptional, low-cost computers by partnering with local computer distributors that provide very low lay-away plans. The computer distributor donates a percentage from the sale of each computer and the revenue from this program goes toward furthering the On It Foundation’s mission of providing free computers and computer training to the neediest families. The On It Foundation receives numerous requests each day for free computers and computer training. Due to the pandemic, our computer donations have decreased and requests for computers have increased tremendously! Therefore, we have pivoted to create the "1st Crowd-Computer Website", to assist us in fundraising for purchasing discounted laptops via our preferred Computer Vendors for our recipients. The website allows our recipients to upload their computer requests for potential Donor Sponsored Computers and aids in providing resources (employment training and jobs, food, housing resources, mental health etc.) to our families based on their zip code.

We are proactively reaching out to Partners/Real Estate Developers/Investors/Corporations with multifamily subsidized housing markets in the United States to provide free computers and Digital Learning/Virtual STEAM events directly to the home as ‘Resident Service' Programs.

Our initiative goals are to provide underrepresented K-12 Students (and their Families) with free 21st Century Technological Programs, Computers, and Internet access directly to multi-family units in the United States to empower families and communities that may not have access and/or funding opportunities to such services. The On It Foundation will work directly with the Housing Property Directs to provide a customized Resident Service Program that suits the budget and community need guidelines.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

National Goals for 2022-2023

The most important goals of the On It Foundation for the next 12 months are:

• To build the capacity of the On It Foundation so to achieve our mission by hiring new staff that will assist the organization in increasing its monetary and in-kind/donor support;
• To grow and further develop the On It Foundation’s Board of Directors; and
• To maintain existing community partnerships while building new strategic alliances with businesses and national organizations that share the On It Foundation’s vision and can contribute to its success and overall vision.
• Expand STEM education and events on National level and increasing events to those K-12 students not exposed to STEM and career opportunities
• Expand STEM ‘Workforce Initiatives’ events on National level to 8-12 grade students and partner with workforce organizations to provide career and job training programs.

Local Initiative Goals for 2022-2023

• Expand partnership with National Arts/Media Private and Public entities to provide 3D-Video/Multi-Media/Film Production/Animation/Gaming, Radio/Music/CD Production, Robotics, Coding & Software/Apps Development, and Advanced Computer Training Courses
• Increase placement of computer and broadband technology within low-income housing developments and provide on-site computer training programs for acquiring advanced job skills and career transitional skill-sets
• Increase Youth Employment Program (YEP) and Private Sector Partners
• Increase Business and Economic Development for Sustainability
• Expand Fundraising Strategies by Increasing National and Global Partners

Purpose of Goals and Outcomes:

Process Outcomes:

• Homes with at least one child receiving free lunches in school will receive a free computer
• Homes that have received free computers will also receive tutelage in the homes.

Impact Outcomes:

• 100% of our Children learn to use computers efficiently.
• 100% of our Children evince a greater interest in schoolwork after six months on the computer as measure by self-evaluation.
• 100% of our Children demonstrate greater involvement in learning as measured by increases in school grades.
• 100% of our Children experience enhanced self-esteem as evaluated by guided self-reporting of the student.

Through our computer training program, students will have the opportunity to access basic academic supports, such as tutoring, homework assistance and college preparation. Improved computer skills reinforce students towards positive self empowerment and skill development, especially since many of our recipients are at risk-students. We provide youth mentorship programs and career/college preparatory skill building with Community Technology Center (CTC) partnerships, and we assist the parents in computer training to instill confidence which in turn provides better computer skills for further employment advance. Our ‘Volunteers R On It’ program provides support to at-risk families, and youth. Through our work with community coalitions, we encourage civic involvement by youth. In addition, the On It Foundation will continue to ensure that students and their families have access to high quality learning technology applications for a period of one year after initial computer is granted.

Each of our students receives a free computer which he/she keeps permanently. After we receive a computer, we clean the hard drive and re-install an operating system and basic software. This process takes approximately 2 weeks. We distribute our computers continuously; therefore, each qualified recipient may have immediate access to a computer. Each recipient and their family receive twenty hours of in-house computer training which is approved and scheduled by the parent/guardian of the student. The 20 hours of in-home computer training are provided by our volunteers, Community Technology Centers (CTCs), and community organizations.

The On It Foundation partners and continues to build mutually beneficial relationships with Community Technology Centers, non-profit organizations of similar mission, Digital Divide Associations, Faith-Based Initiative Associations, Department of Education, Department of Agriculture, and tutorial schools. The On It Foundation’s current strategic alliances include organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, SIFE, Tech Source, HOPE, Black Data Processing Association, the Hispanic Technology Association, the Asian Technology Association, Magic Johnson Technology Center of Jacksonville & Miami, Florida, NASCAR Homestead Miami Speedway, all state-wide public schools, and numerous local community centers and churches that focus on providing technology and social services support. The On It Foundation also provides Internet training and technology instruction programs that assist students in becoming comfortable with and efficient in the use of technology.

The On It Foundation has received computer donations from Chrysler Daimler Corporation, GE Capital, Wachovia, Merrill Lynch, Ryder System, Inc. and numerous small businesses and individuals, as well as in-kind shipping services from DHL/Airborne Express. In addition, The On It Foundation won an award from the Queen Latifah Foundation for Year 2005 and a recipient of the Starter Grant Award from the Children’s Trust in Year 2007 and Year 2008.

The On It Foundation is currently seeking funding for the development and distribution of our 'On It' App which will streamline our free computer donation process.

The effects of this program can extend to other family members as well. In many cases, the adults in the home who do not possess computer skills are able to learn through exposure to technology. To date, the On It Foundation has donated over 5,000 free computers to low-income families with school-age children in grades K-12. We have also provided over 10,000 volunteer hours of computer training to the recipients of our computers.

The On It Foundation Pandemic Pivots:

CREATED NEW PLATFORM TO GET LAPTOPS TO KIDS: 'Crowd-Computer' Campaign: http://www.getonitnow.org/
Due to the need for computers per remote work and learning; our organization is currently experiencing a tremendous reduction in the number of donated laptops and desktops. Therefore, our Founder, Calvetta Phair, created a new AI and Big Data Analysis website that will allow us to create a platform to obtain donations for our recipients as well as provide the recipients programs and services based on their location. All proceeds of donations per this platform will allow us to purchase quality discounted laptops or desktops per our preferred Vendors. This method is coined per our organization as 'Computer Crowdfunding'.
