Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Cancer for College is a small charity that provides need-based college scholarships and educational experiences to cancer survivors. Since inception in 1993, the charity has awarded over 1600 scholarships totaling more than $6M. This year, we will celebrate our 30th anniversary by awarding $1M in scholarships and educational experiences to cancer survivors. In addition, we will continue to foster relations in the cancer community by continuing to grow our scholar mentor groups that are designed to provide our scholars a place where they feel safe to ask questions about school, their professional aspirations and important life decisions.
It is the goal and mission of Cancer for College to help ease the costs associated with college education and cancer related medical debt by offering educational scholarships. In addition, providing valuable resources and networks will allow these survivors thrive through college and beyond.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Cancer for College is an organization that is very event driven when it comes to fundraising. We are fortunate to have a celebrity advocate in Will Ferrell that allows us to use his talent and image to help us work toward our financial goals. In addition, we have been developing educational programming in support of our scholarship fund making our organization more attractive to donors and grant organizations as well.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are a very small organization. We work collaboratively with our active board and volunteer committees to help meet the needs of the scholars. We are working toward adding more support to scholars while also listening to their desires for the types of content and support they need to live their best life.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Cancer for College met it's endowment goal of $10M in 2021. This will allow the charity to award a minimum of $500K in scholarships each year. The board has also chosen to pursue a new goal of $25M so that we can research the best and most efficient use of scholarship funds while also providing valuable educational opportunities to scholars. At the request of our scholars, we are exploring other means of support to the cancer community including providing medical debt relief.
