Urban Farm Development
Garden Partners is in the planning phase of establishing an urban farm within the city limits of Portland, which will expand the impacts of our horticulture programs. Through the establishment of a permanent location, Garden Partners can provide year-round opportunities for participants to improve mental and physical well-being through intergenerational programs of therapeutic horticulture, occupational therapy and farming.
The plan for the urban farm includes learning garden areas with a greenhouse, a barnyard, and indoor spaces for our programs. In our Living Classroom garden, we can offer experiential learning and utilize therapeutic horticulture techniques. At the Collective Garden, neighbors can volunteer their time and in return receive a share of the edible harvest. Throughout the gardens we envision wide, accessible pathways, benches for resting and shaded areas for cooling. The barnyard can house small goats, chickens and bees. The animals can be a part of our educational programming as well as supply food for a future restaurant.
The urban farm would not only be a place to come for experiential programs, but also can be a central gathering place for regional specialists, students and educators that are focused on therapeutic horticulture, occupational therapy and food security.
We propose that the urban farm would host a variety of community-engaging events:
Seasonal, weekly farmer’s market
Speaker and film series focused on health and well-being
Local art fairs
The urban farm can offer creative programming to encourage community-wide participation:
Therapeutic horticulture and occupational therapy sessions
Gardening classes
Chicken, goats and bee classes
Cooking and food prep classes
Art therapy classes
Food security programs
Resource sharing – from seeds to knowledge
