What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
24/7 Shelters
Jackson Street operates Albany House and Corvallis House for youth ages 10-17. Youth can become homeless because of problems in the home such as physical and sexual abuse, mental health or substance abuse disorders of a family member, or parental neglect. These shelters support youth during family crises, or as a first step off the streets.
When youth check-in to our shelter services, they are provided a home-like environment, family-style meals, help with transportation to school and appointments, tutoring, and a variety of educational and extra-curricular activities.
Mediation with family, referrals for counseling or medical care, clothing and personal items are provided as needed. Most youth are able to reunite with their families with the hope that they will succeed long-term.
Unfortunately, some youth do not have a stable home to return to. These youth need a safe, permanent living situation so Jackson Street works with each youth to create an individual plan for stable housing and to help them learn the skills they will need to live independently.
After youth leave the shelter, they are contacted periodically by our Aftercare Case Manager to keep them connected to any on-going services and follow-up support they might need.
Next Steps
The need for support doesn't end at age 17.
Next Steps is our transitional living program which provides housing for young adults ages 18-20, and other support services up to age 24. Those living in shared housing also receive case management and coaching to build skills and independence. We help these youth focus on successful employment and housing so they can be safe adults.
Outreach
Youth homelessness is not rare, even though it can seem invisible. Jackson Street's outreach services help prevent youth from becoming homeless or running away from their families.
Jackson Street operates a 24-hour help line, offering crisis support, information, and referrals. Youth build trust and find case management, first-aid, food, laundry, and hygiene supplies before any crises lead them to our shelters. This is done at schools, on the streets, at our Youth Service Center, and at pop-up sites.
A total of 37 drop-in sites and pop-up sites currently exist in Monroe, Philomath, Corvallis, Albany, Lebanon, Sweet Home, Toledo, Newport, Lincoln City and Siletz.
Prevention
Homeless youth are not bad kids, they are often good kids in bad situations. By connecting vulnerable youth to a positive role model, teaching long-terms skills for self-sufficiency, and promoting healthy relationships, we can prevent youth homelessness.
MENTORING:
Our Mentoring program is certified in Quality Based Mentoring and is an opportunity to foster new interests and experience that can replace negative habits with more positive ones. This year-long program connects youth to a positive adult role-model.
INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS:
This program is open to youth ages 15-18 and brings together Jackson Street staff and community volunteers to provide practical life skills to help youth gain independence and self-sufficiency. Topics taught include job skills, basic budgeting and shopping on a budget, the ins-and-outs of renting an apartment, healthy relationships, and basic household maintenance.
SUPPORT GROUPS:
Focused on promoting healthy relationships, support groups highlight responsibility, confidence, honesty, and anger-reduction using peer-to-peer communication. These groups are actively run in 15 local schools.
