Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Great apes, primates, and their habitat are rapidly disappearing. Victim to habitat loss due to climate change, human encroachment and logging, poaching for bushmeat and illegal wildlife trades, zoonotic disease transmission, and much more, species populations around the world are plummeting. Conservation organizations are working to enact change and protect these species despite non-cooperative government oversight, lack of law enforcement, poverty, lack of local education and engagement, and more, all while operating under tight budgets and now, with additional difficulties due to Covid-19. Throughout this, public misinformation and lack of interest often spur these issues further, making it more difficult for conservation organizations and wildlife sanctuaries to meet their missions and thrive.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Apes Like Us
APES LIKE US is a GLOBIO project to create greater global awareness of great ape survival — it features original video content, educational materials, and resources support to ape sanctuaries and field conservation projects — in turn connecting people to some of the most pressing issues we all face.
Apes Like Us provides GLOBIO a unique story-telling outreach platform. To date, we have reached over a million people worldwide with compelling and engaging original video content on our YouTube channel Apes Like Us.
Apes Like Us is partnering directly with a variety of conservation projects in Africa and Indonesia to increase awareness of great ape survival. This includes the development of a multi-part great ape education series including videos and supporting curriculum about what great apes are, where they live, natural history, and the conflicts they face for survival. This new education project will target schools and villages in and around sanctuaries and conservation areas where great apes live as well as adoption in Western classrooms and zoos.
Great Ape Education Project
The Great Ape Education Project is about leveraging the charismatic appeal of apes like us to explore and discover answer those questions. In doing so our goal is to create greater global awareness of great ape survival, including our own.
Apes Like Us provides a unique, cross-cultural, visual vehicle for educational outreach. Through compelling and engaging original video content, educational tools and resources, connected projects, and other outreach avenues like our Talking Apes podcast series, we link people locally and globally to critical issues facing apes and all life on Earth.
While the Great Apes Education Project encompasses many aspects of our work through GLOBIO, we will be developing a series of videos and accompanying Learning Activity Guides (patterned after our widely used GLOSSOPEDIA Learning Activity Guides) to help explore the five great apes; where they live, their shared traits and family tree, behavior, and the threats to their survival. Over the course of this five-year pilot project, we will be soliciting a wide range of users including formal and non-formal educators, sanctuary education teams, NGO educators, etc.
International Program Partnerships
Sticking true to our roots of promoting environmental awareness and inspiring global stewardship for the planet, GLOBIO has flipped our perspective on how we approach conservation and awareness. Our new approach focuses on four focal regions that have critical at-risk ape and biodiversity numbers, within which we identify and collaborate with like-minded conservation organizations. Currently, we have highlighted the following areas: Upper Albertine Rift Triangle, Western Congo Basin, West Africa Lowland Forest, and Borneo Peat Swamp Forest.
Our support for Program Partners within these regions will manifest through the following ways:
• Creation of media outreach and promotional materials
• Program funding support through grants and donations
• Help drive capacity building initiatives for partners, including skills training
• Develop integrated project approaches to expand local conservation capacity
• Provide additional conservation support as needed, including: development assistance, network building, resource provision.
Our Programs Partners are chosen based on a particular set of criteria which encompasses the primate species they work with, the scope and nature of their external conservation activities, and the geographical region in which they work. Currently, each of our Program Partners is involved in multiple aspects of the following activities:
• Wildlife Rehabilitation/Release/Sanctuary
• Wild Habitat Management, Monitoring, and Conservation - for protective or research purposes
• Habitat Reforestation Projects
• Wildlife Protection Legislation - at state or local level
• Local Community Outreach Programs - for social and economic development
• Local Environmental and Conservation Awareness - children and adults
• Eco-Tourism Initiatives

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
"With knowledge comes understanding, and with understanding comes the power to change lives and the compassion to help heal." ~Andrea C Reed, PhD
GLOBIO's mission is to inspire a positive relationship with our environment by connecting species, people, and planet. As an environmental awareness nonprofit, we work towards this goal by providing support to conservation organizations around the world and sharing their stories globally while educating the public about our shared environmental issues. We believe that one of the best ways to create these connections between species, people, and the planet is by creating compelling, engaging media content of charismatic megafauna (focusing specifically on Great Apes and Primates) to create awareness and educate individuals on the intricacies and wonders of these animals and the habitats in which they live. We aim to expand our reach to touch new audiences of all ages and inspire action on behalf of the environment.
Additionally, by supporting select conservation nonprofits in areas of critical biodiversity through capacity-building initiatives, media content, and other projects, GLOBIO is helping our partner organizations fulfill their mission and better protect their focal species and landscapes. We work closely with our partners to address their needs and garner further support for their species-saving activities by crafting and spreading media content to global audiences on their behalf.
