Mission

OpenOversightVA.org is Virginia's first and only police transparency database. We maintain searchable records on over 27,000 Virginia police officers and sheriff's deputies from more than 290 law enforcement agencies. We index incidents of civilian complaints, archive body camera footage, and collect and publicize documents obtained through hundreds of volunteers' Freedom of Information Act requests.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Searchable Officer Database

We maintain a public, searchable database of over 27,000 law enforcement employees in Virginia. Through hundreds of regular Virginia Freedom of Information Act requests, we obtain employee rosters from over 290 agencies. We convert this information into officer profiles which can be accessed and searched for by the public at openoversightva.org/search (with name) or openoversightva.org/find (if name unknown).

Officers are listed with names, job titles, and salaries. Many officer entries include dates of hire, badge numbers, racial demographic category, gender demographic category, unit of assignment, previous departments, and photos. Some officer profiles include links to indexed incidents of alleged misconduct or complaints via public information we crowdsource from legal filings, body camera footage, news articles, and public records requests.

We update and add to the database regularly.

Population(s) Served

We've collected and publish policy manuals for local police departments and sheriff's offices in over 100 localities. Many of these documents have never been released and most were not previously public. We want people to have access to information about how their local law enforcement agency works.
