What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

COVID-19 was an eye opener. It showed how an entire nation and economy can be upended instantly. Masses were instantly unprepared to handle a forever changed future. Furthermore, the pervasiveness of technology, while offering endless connections, has also created a world of isolation and distraction. The middle class is diminishing, social freedoms are regressing, and the nation is becoming more polarized. Also, the economic landscape has shifted, with job opportunities becoming increasingly scarce and competitive. The rising cost of living, particularly in housing and education, casts a shadow over the future of young adults, hindering their ability to achieve financial stability and independence. They've also witnessed the 9-11 terrorist attack on our nation, mass school shootings, increased violence worldwide, impacts from climate change, normalization of fake news and misinformation, and a global pandemic furthering a decline in societies and economies.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Today's young adults are the first generation that is worse off than their parents. They don't know, and have never experienced, how good the baby boomer generation had it. They think today's chaos is normal and just the way life is. With this realization, Empowered Community Inc was formed to empower students, adults, families and small businesses throughout their communities. Our life-changing free programs are not merely imparting knowledge, but fostering resilience, adaptability, a sense of purpose and restoring optimism. We recognize the importance of face-to-face interactions and foster a sense of community and belonging. We have unstructured activities to unleash creativity, problem-solving abilities, and self-improvement. It's a supportive environment where people can explore their passions, discover their talents, and develop the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our dedicated volunteers provide education, economic empowerment, culture & arts, and health & fitness programs. We're committed to fill social gaps caused by rising living costs, disruption of traditional job markets due to artificial intelligence technologies, and the erosion of real-world social connections.

Some of the strategies we use to achieve our goals and tackle community problems are:

EXPANDING REACH AND IMPACT

- Partnerships: Collaborate with schools, businesses, community centers, and other organizations to reach a wider audience and leverage existing resources.

- Outreach Programs: Target outreach initiatives to engage with young adults and low-income / working class communities.

- Volunteer Recruitment and Training: Strengthen volunteer engagement through training programs, recognition initiatives, and creating a supportive environment.

- Utilize Online and Hybrid Programs: Use online programs as well as a hybrid format to increase accessibility and cater to diverse schedules.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND ENHANCEMENT

- Needs Assessment: Continue conducting regular needs assessments to ensure programs are addressing the most pressing issues within the community.

- Skill-building Workshops: Hold workshops focused on relevant skills like financial literacy and planning, digital literacy, career development, and critical thinking.

- Mentorship Programs: Connect participants with mentors who can provide guidance and support on personal and professional growth.

- Health and Well-being Resources: Integrate in-person activities to increase exercise, socialization, and community while using regular online video conferencing to provide in-home wellness activities.

- Social and Cultural Events: Organize fun and engaging events that foster a sense of community, belonging, and cultural exchange.

SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPACT MEASUREMENT

- Clear Program Objectives and Measurable Outcomes: Track progress, measure impact, and refine our programs based on data.

- Secure Funding Sources: Diversify funding sources through grants, fundraising events, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations.

Advocacy: Advocate for policies that address the systemic issues were tackling, such as affordable housing, accessible education, and ethical AI development.

ADDITIONALLY:

- Staying Informed: Regularly update our understanding of the evolving challenges faced by communities and adapt strategies accordingly.

- Promote Success Stories: Share the positive outcomes of our programs with the community to inspire others and attract further support.

- Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion: Ensure our programs and resources are accessible and welcoming to individuals from all backgrounds.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
