What we aim to solve
The redwood forests are true wonders of the world — as significant to our planet as the Amazon rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef and the Serengeti. Home to the tallest and largest trees on the planet, the redwood forests are also the world’s most effective carbon sink, storing three times more carbon per acre than any other known ecosystems. These are the greatest forests in the world. Explosive demand for lumber devastated what were once vast, ancient redwood forests that stretched from Central California to Southern Oregon. Just 5 percent of the original coast redwood range remains. We have protected the most magnificent primeval groves, but in the process, we have created islands of redwoods whose health is jeopardized by adjacent roads, clear-cuts and development. What we have protected is not truly saved.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Redwood Land Program
Our REDWOOD LAND program includes a portfolio of projects that are critical to protecting the remaining old-growth redwood forest, securing the forest footprint, and restoring the ecological conditions required to heal forests and establish the old-growth forest of the future.
Science and Innovation
Our SCIENCE AND INNOVATION programs give us the ability to develop tools, models, approaches and working relationships that accelerate the protection and regeneration of forests that have been used for commercial purposes.
Redwoods Education
The League’s Education Program connects new generations of caretakers to redwood forests and teaches students about the importance of redwood forests and what we can do to protect them.
Explore Redwoods
Our Explore Redwoods program includes offline and online tools to give people more ways to interact with the redwood forest, no matter where they live. The free Explore Redwoods brochure will introduce readers to 110 redwood parks and places in California and Oregon. Our new Explore Redwoods online tool helps visitors plan their trip to the redwood forest. Free Redwoods Days will welcome visitors to California redwood state parks throughout 2018.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
In 2018, Save the Redwoods League celebrates a century of protecting, restoring and connecting people to magnificent redwood forests. The League is embarking on a Centennial Vision that will double the size of the protected redwood reserve over the next 100 years — protecting more of the primeval forests and putting young redwoods on the path to becoming magnificent old-growth stands.
By taking bold steps today, we can return redwood forests to the scale and beauty that existed before any of us were born — protected forever, restored to grow old again and connected to people through a network of parks and reserves that inspire all of us with the beauty and power of nature. A new chapter for redwoods begins today. By standing for the redwoods, you stand for the future. Join us!
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
--By purchasing land and conservation easements, accelerate redwood forest conservation on a large (landscape) scale, and secure protection of remaining old-growth coast redwood and giant sequoia.
--Advance ecological forestry conservation easements on working forests.
--Leverage science to set new standards for redwood forest stewardship.
--Identify ecological restoration priorities across the redwood range.
--Implement landscape-scale restoration projects to accelerate old-growth forest conditions.
--Transform public access and interpretation in the redwood parks to inspire visitation and attract new audiences.
--Create signature redwood destinations in select geographies.
--Strategically upgrade recreational, educational, and interpretive infrastructure in existing parks.
--Raise awareness and understanding of redwood forests through marketing redwood parks and partnering with schools and environmental education centers to develop and implement redwood-focused programming.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
One of the nation's oldest conservation organizations, Save the Redwoods League since 1918 has protected more than 214,000 acres of redwood forests and helped create 66 redwood parks and reserves by purchasing redwood forests and the surrounding land needed to nurture them. We have pioneered innovative, science-based forest-restoration work and touched the lives of millions of people by connecting them to nature.
What sets Save the Redwoods League apart from other organizations is our commitment to investing in science, research, technology and tools development that will accelerate our ability to heal redwood forests. Through research, we are gaining a better understanding of how individual redwood groves interact with the greater redwood landscape and how to apply best practices in land and forest management.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Save the Redwoods League since 1918 has protected more than 214,000 acres of redwood forests and supporting land and helped create 66 redwood parks and reserves by purchasing redwood forests and the surrounding land needed to nurture them.
We have pioneered science-based forest-restoration work, setting more than 4,500 acres of historically logged forestland on the path to become ancient forests for future generations.
Our pioneering Redwoods and Climate Change Initiative revealed that old-growth redwood forests store more carbon per acre than any other type of forest, confirming that they are critical resource in fighting climate change. This initiative’s findings are enabling us to better protect the redwoods in the future. Our research grants program is yielding discoveries about redwoods’ genetics and the diversity of forest wildlife.
Our education and parks-support programs have touched the lives of millions of people by connecting them to nature.
