Mission

JCRC envisions a more just society, a strong and vibrant Jewish community in the United States and in Israel, and works to enhance that strength through collaboration with other communities. To achieve this vision, JCRC educates and advocates on issues of vital importance to the organized Jewish community based on consensus, civility and an expanded commitment to living Jewish values of social justice.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Public Affairs

With decades of experience, JCRC is the go-to public affairs organization for the Jewish community and a trusted liaison with political and civic leaders. As a convener and advocate, JCRC cultivates the Jewish community’s commitment to Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), providing opportunities for activism and advocacy for the causes we believe in. JCRC is proud to work and build coalitions with interfaith and interethnic partners on issues of shared concern, united by our common pursuit of a just society.

Population(s) Served

The Institute for Curriculum Services (ICS) is an independently funded national initiative of the JCRC and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCRC is the 501c3 organization). ICS is dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 education on Jews, Judaism, and Israel in the United States and accomplishes this by developing standards aligned curricula and training teachers around the country. ICS believes an excellent education is essential to building a strong civil society where all people can flourish.

Population(s) Served

For decades, JCRC has led the Bay Area Jewish community to create and strengthen coalitions, and to build bridges with other ethnic, civic and faith groups to advance a civil and just society. In recent years, we have worked in coalition on immigration, economic and racial justice, human trafficking, poverty and other policy matters.

A leading go-to Jewish organization for other ethnic, faith and emerging communities seeking Jewish partnership, we are also sought out by other faith clergy and civic leaders for counsel and input when they are navigating issues of relevance to the Jewish community. JCRC envisions a healthy, just and secure democratic society where communities collaborate to enhance the quality of life for all. We work toward this vision by engaging Jews in creative and impactful bridge-building initiatives that foster strong multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-faith understanding and respect. Through this work, we promote positive social change and advance our common agendas.

Population(s) Served

JCRC values Israel’s integral role in the modern Jewish identity. We are committed to promoting a secure and vibrant Israel as the Jewish and democratic state and homeland of the Jewish people. JCRC strives to advance peace, reconciliation and a two-state solution through education and community action, working within our community and with allies to fight the campaign to delegitimize Israel. JCRC hosts lectures and provides informative resources on Israel and the Middle East.

Invest in Peace is a JCRC-organized coalition that supports the self-determination of Palestinians and Israelis and is dedicated to championing efforts on the ground that move these societies towards a shared future of coexistence and prosperity.

Population(s) Served

The American Jewish community has benefited from a strong and healthy democracy because democratic systems and norms provide proven protection against the discriminations that too often target racial, religious and ethnic minority communities. But those systems that have provided us haven are currently under duress.

Population(s) Served

The Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL), a JCRC strategic initiative, trains volunteer reading tutors and matches them with struggling children in underserved public elementary schools to help ensure that all children can read by the end of the third grade. Limited literacy means limited opportunity for too many of California’s public school children who are unable to read at grade level. Studies show that proficiency in reading by the end of third grade is a crucial marker in a child’s educational development.

To meet this challenge, JCL recruits, trains, and supports nearly 400 volunteer reading tutors and places them in public elementary schools throughout the Bay Area. JCL’s volunteer tutors share the magic of reading and give children a better chance to succeed —all in as little as an hour per week.
