What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Adoption Center and Mobile Outreach
Our adoption center finds loving homes for cats and dogs rescued from overcrowded, public shelters. We also have a mobile outreach vehicle that brings animals and the public together at adoption events.
Hope Medical Fund
Our on-site veterinary hospital provides our homeless dogs and cats with continuous medical oversight and care to get them ready for adoption. Our donor-supported Hope Medical Fund supports the cost of veterinary care for our shelter animals.
Train the Bay
Dog training classes for the public. Discounts available to adopters.
Spay the Bay
Spay the Bay, founded in 2016 by Berkeley Humane, offers low-cost spay and neuter services for dogs and cats in order to reduce animal overpopulation in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We are dedicated to providing spay and neuter services so that pet guardians can access critical services and resources, regardless of their financial abilities. We believe that when spay and neuter services are made accessible, pet guardians are more likely to spay and neuter their pets, which prevents the birth of unplanned litters and alleviates overcrowding in local shelters.
Pet Loss Support
Berkeley Humane was the first organization in the East Bay to start offering pet loss emotional support. Since 2004, we have provided comfort to thousands of pet parents who were searching for ways to cope with the loss of a beloved family pet.
Most of us know the enormous sadness of having our beloved pets pass away. The feelings of grief, despair, and loss are sometimes overwhelming. Berkeley Humane is here to help. Sessions begin with a half-hour discussion about a featured stage in the journey of grief, followed by an hour for sharing personal grief experiences. Participants may attend the talk, the support group, or both.
Pet Food Pantry
Berkeley Humane's Pet Food Pantry program provides free pet food to low-income pet guardians in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties once a month. One of the most common reasons for pet relinquishment is financial difficulty, and our Pet Food Pantry helps struggling guardians keep beloved pets in their homes.
The Pet Food Pantry program is entirely supported by community donations. Food is available for up to two pets on a first-come, first-served basis until we run out. Pets must be spayed/neutered. Please see our website for dates and times.
