What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Jazz in the Middle
Launched in 2001, the SFJAZZ Jazz in the Middle (JIM) program provides curriculum-based residencies, linking jazz and academic subjects in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classroom. JIM was created by SFJAZZ in partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) to address the need for arts education in middle schools.
Offered free to public middle schools, curriculum complies with government guidelines and district content standards, and is informed by the most current arts education research. Teacher training sessions provide professional development and resources to participating teachers. The collaboration extends into the classroom, where SFJAZZ Artist/Educators engage students in a process of creative transformation.
The residency’s teaching methodology confers skills, tools, and methods that enable students to negotiate this important transitional period of their lives. Drawing on the fundamental elements of jazz, students are immersed in the concepts of collaboration, improvisation, and transformation in a real-life simulation mirroring the creation of live jazz on the bandstand.
High School All-Stars
Directed by esteemed educator and performer Paul Contos, the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Orchestra comprises 26 of the finest young Bay Area jazz musicians, selected annually by competitive audition. The ensemble has appeared at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ Spring Season, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition, Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, the Jazz Education Network Conference, and at concerts in top professional jazz clubs, festivals, museums, and community arts centers throughout California. Ensemble members enjoy regular workshops, master classes and mentoring sessions with leading artists, such as members of the SFJAZZ Collective, Terence Blanchard, Yusef Lateef, and Vijay Iyer.
Jazz in Session
The Jazz In Session (JIS) program collaborates with SFUSD schools in strengthening existing jazz programs as well as fostering continued expansion through teacher support, hands-on clinics and professional development for school faculty, band directors and administrators. The goals of the program include our efforts to support the District’s “Arts Education Master Plan” in making music instruction – in particular jazz music education – accessible to a significant portion of the San Francisco public school population.
