Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Wellness Clinic
We are a fully-licensed, federally qualified health center (FQHC) serving people of color and the LGBTQ community. Our team provides respectful, compassionate health care that focuses on you as a whole person. Your medical staff can connect you to counseling, therapy, case management, and community services—everything you need to reach health, wellness, and equality.
HIV Treatment and Care
We are experts in HIV treatment and care. Our team of doctors, nurses, therapists, case managers, and peer navigators can help you take control of your health in a safe space. We are partners in your health and wellness. We specialize in people of color, transgender men and women, gay and bisexual men, and the chronically homeless.
Transgender Services
We have a wide array of health and community services that are tailored to your needs, including workshops, support groups, computer lab, workforce readiness trainings, mental health and substance use counseling, case management, and medical care. Our drop-in center, TRANS:THRIVE, is a safe space by and for the transgender community. Together, we can get to health, wellness, and equality.
HIV and STD Testing
Our agency currently offers free confidential Drop-In HIV Testing for those who qualify. To qualify for a Drop-In HIV Test, you must identify as either:
1) An Asian American and/or Pacific Islander guy who has sex with other guys
2) Transgender, genderqueer, or non-gender binary.
If you qualify, feel free to drop in anytime during our clinic hours for your free test! Don’t identify for our Drop-In HIV Testing? We’ve got you covered! Call the Wellness Clinic at 415-292-3400 to schedule an appointment for a comprehensive STD and HIV check.
Training and Consultation
Our expert trainers and consultants can help you implement High-Impact HIV Prevention programs, improve your ability to work with people living with HIV/AIDS, and build a stronger workforce. We provide free training and consultation (also known as capacity building assistance) to community-based organizations and non-medical providers in California and across the United States. Our California Statewide Training & Education Program (CSTEP) sets the standard in HIV treatment and public benefits education and training for HIV and non-medical providers.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
API Wellness Center is a LGBTQ and people of color health organization that transforms lives by advancing health, wellness, and equality. We believe everyone deserves to be healthy and needs access to the highest-quality health care. We foster resilience, strength, connection, health, and wellness for all communities. To us, health care will always be grounded in social justice.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
API Wellness Center has a robust integration of health services, as well as a wide-reaching community development, capacity building and training division, which educate, advocate and serve to strengthen our communities. We respond to diverse needs of clients, providers and organizations on a local, national and international level. Our vision encompasses all communities of color. Our culturally competent services are models for comprehensive and holistic programming for all underserved and marginalized communities. We partner with national HIV organizations to ensure a unified voice for people of color who make up 70% of the HIV epidemic in the U.S. Capitalizing on our expertise and focusing on where our services intersect enables us to build innovative strategies around sexual health and put innovative, effective programs in place that go beyond health care services. We foster a holistic approach that advances policies and practices to improve the health and quality of life for the most vulnerable and stigmatized communities of color using data and insight gained over 29 years.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
One of our core principles is that our staffing model include representation from the communities that we serve, including LGBTQ and formerly homeless individuals, and that services are provided in a culturally and linguistically competent manner. Over a third of staff positions in our HIV care services are held by people who are openly HIV-positive and committed to working with clients as peers who have experienced their situation first hand. Similarly our programs for transgender individuals are managed by staff who are transgender. These individuals in turn provide ongoing orientation, guidance, and assistance to other project staff in reaching, serving, and being sensitive to transgender populations.
Our executive team and program directors mentor our staff and volunteers to advance their careers. We are committed to developing leadership among our clients and community members. Every program offers a leadership development component and we prioritize recruitment for all open positions from these pools of candidates. A consumer advisory board of clients from across all programs provides guidance and expertise for ongoing program quality improvement. This consumer advisory board consists of 10-15 members reflective of the San Francisco Bay Area communities we serve.
We are also a certified Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). A PCMH is a place where patients are treated with respect, dignity, and compassion, enabling strong and trusting relationships with providers and staff. PCMH is a model for achieving primary care excellence so that care is received in the right place, at the right time, and in the manner that best suits a patient's needs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Health Care: With our FQHC designation, we joined a national healthcare safety net of 1,300 health centers serving nearly 23 million people. This endorsement from the federal government is an investment in the future of LGBTQ health, dramatically increasing our capacity to serve vulnerable and stigmatized San Franciscans by 2017. Our patients are now able to access primary medical care linked to the mental health and community services that are the foundation for health, wellness, and equality.
Transgender Health: 617 transgender and gender-nonconforming people find safety and support in our transgender community drop-in center. The program, the largest of its kind in the nation, links clients to a comprehensive array of transgender-competent, on-site medical, mental health, case management, and community support services regardless of HIV status.
HIV Care: 464 people living with HIV access life-saving HIV treatment and care through our programs, including specialized services for transgender women of color, residents of the Tenderloin, and Asians and Pacific Islanders. Our clients are considered the “hardest-to-reach"—they fight substance use, homelessness, poverty, and mental illness—and still they are making great strides in their treatment with the help of services tailored to their needs. Despite the barriers they face, they are outperforming the nation in managing the disease, making it less likely they will pass on the virus.
HIV Prevention: Young gay and bisexual men and transgender women of color have access to innovative HIV prevention medication and support services.
Capacity Building: Almost 700 providers across the nation were trained to provide culturally-competent, high-impact HIV prevention services across the nation. Our services include training, consultation, and general education to help individuals and organizations improve their ability to prevent HIV transmission in their communities and geographic areas. Our California Statewide Training & Education Program (CSTEP) sets the standard in HIV treatment and public benefits education and training for HIV and non-medical providers. Trainees can also access the most up-to-date information they need through our innovative online learning platform, offering both self-paced, facilitated, and peer-to-peer education.
