School and teacher grants

Proposals should emphasize goals and objectives within the school’s Continuous Improvement Plan in the areas of Remediation/Tutoring, Enhancement/Enrichment, and Completion of Requirements. PAEF does not fund mandated programs or staff salaries.
Scholarships

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We want every child in the public schools of Port Angeles, Washington, to have equal opportunities to succeed in school and in life. No child should be restricted by inability to acquire basic needs which allow active participation in classes and activities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Basic Needs:
PAEF assists with unmet needs which may impact the ability to attend school, participate and be ready to learn. School staff can apply on behalf of students from low-income families when no other private or public funding sources are available. Examples are shoes, coats, PE uniforms, graduation gowns, swim gear, medical, vision, and counseling services, lice treatment kits, Associated Student Body cards.
School and Teacher grants:
School and Teacher Grants are available for creative and innovative ideas for the classroom and beyond. Teachers, administrators, para-educators, and parent groups are encouraged to apply. Often there is collaboration within schools, or across the district to include all students at one grade level.
PAEF funds do not support existing or mandated programs or staff salaries.
Applications are frequently submitted for technology and field trips. Many students have never travelled beyond our rural area, or even to the many natural wonders in our back yard. Providing a wide variety of opportunities may have a profound influence on a student's future, sparking interest in a previously unknown area.
Teachers can be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses of basic classroom materials.
Student Achievement and Scholarships:
PAEF offers academic and vocational scholarships to deserving students. Endowed Scholarship Funds are invested and managed by PAEF, with a scholarship committee determining awards based on criteria set by the donor. Some scholarships are recurring if the student meets certain requirements.
The PAEF Academic Achievement Award recognizes graduating seniors who have achieved a GPA of at least 3.5 every semester of their first three years at Port Angeles High School while taking at least 9 Honors, Advanced Placement, or University of Washington in the High School classes.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We work in collaboration with the Port Angeles School District to know and understand issues affecting students.
Our annual Celebrate Education! dinner raises funds for School and Teacher grants. At the dinner, we also highlight our accomplishments and honor a volunteer for Distinguished Service in supporting youth in our community.
A percentage of donations not restricted by the donor or by the board are invested in the PAEF general endowment and the scholarship endowment to grow our financial base for providing scholarships, student needs assistance, and school and teacher grants.
The board of directors take an active role in operations of PAEF, keeping staffing costs to a minimum. Staff costs are paid through grants received and our endowment fund, meaning more of contributed dollars are spent in delivery of programs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are committed to our 3 core areas (Basic Needs, School & Teacher Grants, and Scholarships). We continuously make changes which will improve delivery in those areas.
Since students move through the district we always have a new audience for our services.
In 2018 we surveyed Port Angeles School District staff to learn additional ways we might support students and programming.
Our two newest committees are Governance, to ensure we have all the policies and procedures necessary for diligent management; and Inspiring Philanthropy, to explore new ways of getting our message out and consistent financial support for continued efforts.
