Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To enrich and enhance the lives of at-risk, incarcerated and partially disabled people through the art of sailing. We target specific populations that are underserved by the community at-large or society as a rule. Through sailing as a complex metaphor for life, we enable individuals to experience the joy of working as a team, learning new skills and accomplishing tasks that they would not ordinarily have access to.

The Blue Water Foundation (BWF) takes incarcerated students, at-risk students and community organization based participants on weekly, or more frequent sailing excursions on any of our sailing vessels currently berthed in Marinas in San Francisco and Alameda County. During these sailing excursions, which typically last approximately 4 hours, our participants will start with a safety talk given by the boat Captain. Once underway, participants learn about the value of teamwork, responsible leadership, safety practices and the dynamic environment through the art of boat sailing on San Francisco Bay and surrounding waterways. Each student has an opportunity to steer the boat which empowers them to be confident in their judgment and choices. The typical crew is 5 or more volunteers. The typical student participants can number between 5 and 13 which will include a teacher or probation officer from the institution being served. At the end of the sail, volunteers remain with the boat to clean, organize and safely moor the boat in the slip.
