New Work

Z Space’s New Work program commissions, develops and produces a robust season of new works each year. We provide time and resources for multiple workshops, staged readings, and long-term support during the development process which in some cases can take several years. Our organization offers flexibility and resources at every stage of development to foster an artist’s exploration and creative process. We are committed to these artists and projects for the long term and understand that means creating opportunities for development that are specifically tailored for the needs of each project. Z Space also offers an eclectic presenting and co-presenting schedule year-round, partnering with arts institutions and ensembles from around the country to offer Bay Area audiences access to innovative and experimental new work.

Artists and performers

Word for Word Performing Arts Company is an ensemble whose mission is to tell great stories with elegant theatricality, staging performances of classic and contemporary fiction. Founded in 1993 by Susan Harloe and JoAnne Winter, Word for Word believes in the power of the short story to provide solace, compassion, and insight into our daily lives.

Population(s) Served
Adults

The Youth Arts Education Program reaches hundreds of youth and adults annually with unique arts education workshops and residencies. Using the Word for Word method of performing literary texts verbatim, Youth Arts teaching artists lead students in transforming fiction or poetry into staged performances. Texts are specifically chosen to align with educational standards and classroom curriculum. In exploring a text, students develop reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills. They gain experience in working and problem solving in groups, and experience a kinesthetic and visual connection to text. By helping youth become better listeners, speakers, and readers, Youth Arts aims to instill a love of language and reading, enhance performance skills, and bolster confidence and self esteem in the classroom and beyond.
