What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
First Steps
The First Steps playgroup is for 6–36-month-old children and their caregivers. In this group, families work together to build healthy attachment and bonding. Teachers provide support so that children can continue to develop their cognitive and emotional skills, while building friendships with the other children. Activities include free play time, literacy education, arts and crafts, dancing, games, and snack time.
Homework Club
During the school year, the Homework Club is offered to Kindergarten – 5th graders each school day and emphasizes literacy and academics in a fun, social environment. This program's focus is on reinforcing the learning that happens in schools, providing additional support on school assignments and classes. After homework, children play outdoors, create art projects, and learn new games.
Summer Academic Enrichment
Family Connections' summer program is a full-day, Monday-Friday program where children develop strong bonds with one another and their teachers. Each summer week has a theme, so that science, math, literacy, and arts skills are developed while kids explore new, interesting topics. In addition to time in the classrooms and nearby park, there are weekly field trips to local cultural institutions, bowling lanes, mini golf courses, and fun landmarks.
Case Management
Families work with a case manager to create an individualized plan for their needs, including accessing tools to help make positive changes and increase stability. At Family Connections, families receive support and resources to help find assistance with childcare, schooling, housing, employment, and basic family needs.
Support Groups
Family Connections' Support Groups provide a space for parents/caregivers to connect with one another and build relationships. Families meet with family support staff and other parents/caregivers to: discuss concerns, share tips and resources, explore parenting and child development topics hear updates on Family Connections’ programs, events, and opportunities. Support Groups are offered in Cantonese, Vietnamese, English, and Spanish.
Parenting Classes
Family Connections' Parenting Classes are evidence-based and interactive, designed to help caregivers strengthen their relationships with their children. In these classes, parents learn how to model positive behavior, improve their child’s cooperation, and decrease their parental stress. Family Connections offers ongoing series of classes, such as 1-2-3 Magic, as well as one-time workshops for families.
Basic Needs Assistance
Family Connections offers basic needs assistance through its Grocery Program, Diaper Bank, and PPE Distribution. Each month, Family Connections hosts two food distribution days for families to pick up free bags of fresh produce and grocery items. Family Connections' priority is to keep the community safe and protected, with the items they need for their family, which include regularly distributing personal protective equipment, diapers, and baby formula to families in need.
Pop N' Play
Pop N’ Play is a program for 3-4-year-old children and their parents/caregivers to have fun together.
Activities focus on pre-literacy, arts, crafts, and family bonding. This is a great starting point to introduce families to Family Connections' collaborative learning programs and prepare for preschool.
Preschool
Family Connections' Preschool is an academic and play-based program taught by bilingual and credentialed teachers, providing a balanced curriculum to prepare children for kindergarten. The program's classroom activities are child-centered, providing space for children to express their creativity, and teachers work to strengthen children’s social-emotional skills to become independent and inquisitive learners.
