Mission

The mission of the Muktabodha Indological Research Institute is to preserve rare and endangered texts from the religious and philosophical traditions of classical India and make them accessible for study and scholarship worldwide through our online Digital Library. We view these texts, and the wisdom associated with them, as a timeless resource for all humanity.

The Indian subcontinent contains a breathtaking treasury of manuscripts and orally transmitted knowledge of the unique experiences and universal wisdom of its sages, yogis, and philosophers. However, due to the disappearance of traditional patronage, the pressure of globalization, and the ravages of a harsh climate, much of this knowledge has not only fallen into obscurity but is in danger of being lost to the world forever.

The goal of the Muktabodha Digital Library is to preserve and make accessible rare Sanskrit manuscripts and texts in multiple digital formats. Currently we have texts from the Kaula-Trika, Saiva-Siddhanta, Virashaiva, Pancaratra, Shree Vidya, Shakta and Natha Yoga schools. Most importantly, a search engine has been created that gives the researcher the ability to search for words or phrases within digital texts. Over 2, 600 manuscripts have been digitized to date.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Identify, discover, and procure access to rare manuscripts of Indian Spiritual Traditions. Scan and photograph items to archive in Digital Library. Create and maintain Digital Library for scholarly research. Support translation of such materials into today's languages.

Create Muktabodha India Trust as a partner organization headquartered in India. Identify prominent scholars who can identify items of interest in India and around the world. Create an Academic Advisory Council to create and approve proposals. Develop a technical team to design and maintain an internet based Digital Library containing scanned items, catalog information, as well as transliteration of texts and continue to evolve the capabilities of the library. Create translations grants so that scholars can translate the material. Make non-scholars who are interested in preserving India's spiritual wisdom aware of Muktabodha's work.

Muktaboda has a board of directors dedicated to the mission. There is an Academic Advisory council of seven scholars dedicated to Indology. Several scholars travel to India on a regular basis. There is also an Information Technology professional supporting the development of the Digital Library, a marketing professional, and fund raising professional on staff. All staff members including the Advisory Council and the Board, offer their time and effort at no cost to Muktabodha. In India, there is a group of trustees, and a staff of typists who provide transliteration services working with a prominent scholar. Muktabodha also has relationships with prominent scholars on a fee basis. A financial officer is in charge of all financial matters.

There are roughly 2600 items in our Digital Library. We have completed most of the very important Kashmir Shaivism manuscripts through a well known Scholar from Varanasi India. We have added rare Gokarna manuscripts to the library. We developed a Vedic school (Vedashala) to preserve the ancient oral Vedic traditions. The schools is now its own independent trust in India. We have offered several fellowship grants to scholars. Our next projects are to evolve the technology of the Digital Library so that more scholars can use it, create a larger team in India to support the scholarly work, identify additional areas of Indian traditions whose material is in danger in being lost forever. We also intend to create translation grant projects.
