What we aim to solve

Families facing heart or liver transplant surgeries can become extremely vulnerable when it comes to things like housing, transportation, and food. Harboring Hearts tries to alleviate the financial and emotional burden that heart and liver transplant patients face by providing emergency housing, transportation, food, and emotional support programming to heart transplant, liver transplant, and cardiothoracic surgery patients and their caregivers.

Harboring Hearts is working to establish a sustainable platform of community awareness regarding heart-disease, and likewise serve as an accessible, reliable resource for heart-patients and their families: a resource providing emergency funds, short-term housing, and other logistical & emotional support during time of treatment and recovery.

1) Internal Leadership Commitment & Communication
a. We exercise a creative, collaborative, and warm culture internally that allows us to sustain a compassionate, patient approach and commitment to the persons we help—keeping heart patients as the focus of any goal or work we do
b. Though we are a small team, each of us takes ownership over the efficient pursuit of tasks
c. A team of consulting specialists and volunteers remain available for projects that supplement

2) Strong Board Leadership
a. Harboring Hearts maintains strong relationships with a diversity of sector-leadership who serve on our Board, from finance to primary caregivers, which gives us the capacity to efficiently implement strategies of sound and thorough grounding

3) Scale of Operations
a. Over the past five years, we have kept on a steady course of responsibly balancing our capacities. Though we are not yet able to help every patient, the saddening reality is we may never be able to—no single organization can responsibly state that. However, we do help as many as we can in a manner that allows us to do so with meaningful impact and an understanding that our capacity to help outwardly grows alongside the internal achievements met by patience and dedication

1) Institutional Collaborations.

• Mount Sinai Hospital
• NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center
• Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in New York City
• Lucile Packard Children's Hospital - Stanford (California)

2) Professional relationships and sounding boards with
• Hospital Staff/Social Workers (who serve the patients of heart disease)
• Community Leaders (who support events, fundraising, and promoting the message and services offered by HH)
• Vendors (who offer products and services to our community events for the benefit of patients and families)
• Corporate donors

3) Personal relationships and sounding boards with
i. Patients we have helped
ii. Survivors of heart-disease who do not need the type of support HH offers, but who likewise recognize the necessary presence of those resources while undergoing treatment
iii. Families who have been affected by heart-disease
iv. Healthy-living advocates, who believe in the power of heart-healthy decision making and share that with the patients we help

We maintain strong transparency and a robust record keeping system of every person we have helped. Our system of quantitative and qualitative data gathering records type of funding, amount requested (and provided), surveys, and community feedback dialogue with hospital staff, doctors, and families.

• We have grown from a staff of 2 co-founders to a team of 4 full-time employees, supported by consultants and volunteers who are committed to our vision • We started with one hospital affiliation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and we have now expanded to all 8 heart transplant centers in New York City. • The Advisory Board retains support from eight of the founding members, and has grown to include strength of leadership from individuals and multiple sectors - We have grown from a grant-to-grant basis (often funded by a donation specific to and for the patient’s immediate needs) to overseeing a source of funds that allows us to be both proactive and readily accessible to patients at most times - Through our Emergency Fund Program and events we have helped more than 6,000 families with both housing and financial support - We have provided more than $800,000 in emergency grants, which includes housing support. - In 2018 we launched our first ever Junior Board. - We have grown from two program initiatives to four. - We have grown to 8 board members - We have expanded to every heart transplant center in New York City. We are now in 8 partnering hospitals.
