What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Mentoring transition foster youth can provide youth with personal connectedness, supervision and guidance, skills training, career enrichment opportunities, goals and hope for the future.

The results of researching effective programs culminated in what we believe is the proper prescription for our community and the youth served.  Our approach is a comprehenisve, collaborative effort of services to ensure a successful transition to adulthood.  Our current collaborators include but are not limited to Imperial County Department of Social Services, Probation Department, and Behavioral Health Services, as well as the Superior Court, Imperial Valley Colldge, Court appointed special Advocates, Child Abuse Prevention Council, Imperial Valley Regional Occupation Program, SURE Crisis Helpline, and Clinicas de Salud Del Pueblo, Inc.  Program development focused on filling current gaps in services as well as enhancing the delivery of these services identified as most critical to successful transitioning.

We believe that the young people from foster care have aspirations, strengths, and talents, and certainly the potential to become fully participating citizens who contribute in a variety of fields. We noted two significant issues in programs for transitioning foster youth. The first was the culture of low expectations for teens in foster care, and secondly the lack of accountability for their success or failure. Weissman & Associates Fostering Dreams is committed to treating the transitioning foster youth as subjects of their own preparation for adulthood. We must enable them to become independent thinkers and lifelong students who carve out their own paths to the future.

Population(s) Served

Counseling, support, progam referrals, as well as financial assistance to assist transitioning foster youth in their educational and career goals.  This assistance will provide the youth with the tools necessary to gain well-rounded educations, marketable job skills, and/or economic stability.

Population(s) Served

Providing assistance in locating affordable housing and furnishings.  Training on tenancy and budgeting is an essential component to prepare youth for a stable environment.  A stable environment will afford the youth a safe environment and allow them to concentrate on their education and/or vocational goals.  In addition the training on budgeting will provide them an invaluable life skills lesson.

Population(s) Served

This program component provides immediate financial support in emergency situations that may include rent money, bus passes, gas cards, interview clothing, and vehicle repair.  Grocery gift cards are available for immediate food relief.  Transitioning foster youth must have a safety net in order to be able to move forward with their education and/or career goals.  This safety net will allow the youth to focus on an end goal and successful transition to adulthood.

Population(s) Served

This program addresses the specific health needs of transitioning foster youth through health-focused case management and education.  At the core of these services is ensuring that youth have access to basic health care coverage, such as Medi-Cal benefits, and that they are proactive in selecting a primary care physician and seeking preventive care.  Information is provided on health and wellness, nutrition, and exercise, healthy relationships, and preventing domestic violence.
