Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We work with the community's most vulnerable youth -- foster youth, and youth who have been impacted by trauma. Experiencing traumatic events as a young person can impact the brain's normal brain development. Often wires get crossed and trauma takes root to cause all sorts of negative experiences. At Youth Homes, we work to help heal children from trauma, so that they can heal, and be able to learn the skills needed to thrive in our society.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program
On any given day, Youth Homes provides a safe and supportive environment for 24 foster youth in our in four state-licensed six-bed residential homes.
Aftercare Program
Aging out of the foster care system is challenging time for foster youth as they experience the bittersweet emotions of launching into an independent adulthood while also leaving the structure and stability provided by our residential program.Through our Aftercare program, we are able to continue to provide resources and access to support structures to help youth stay on track for success.
The Aftercare program is part of an array of mental health, case management and skill building programs for young adults ages 16-21. Each young adult is assigned a primary therapist or a youth advocate (former foster youth or independent living skills coach) to help them formulate and realize achievable goals for their future.
By staying involved with our residential program youth up to the age of 21, Aftercare clinicians and youth advocates can continue to support their mental health needs and help build independent living skills, such as finding housing, money management, meal planning, and securing employment.
Resource Family Program
We are a licensed Foster Family Agency contracted with Contra Costa County to provide Intensive Treatment Foster Care.
We provide information, crisis interventions, training, certification, behavioral coaching,
counseling services and 24/7 on-call support to our Foster/Adoptive Families.
Therapeutic Behavioral Services
Highly trained Behavioral Coaches work with
children, youth and their families in their homes, schools and community settings.
The goal is to keep the child in the safest and
lowest level of care necessary.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goals includes ensuring that ALL children have access to a safe and healthy family home, a supportive and nurturing network of adults, opportunities to expand their well-being, including education, life and job-skills trainings, and access to trauma-informed care.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our programs support basic needs, create safe environments, and provide therapeutic support to build optimism and confidence for the future. Our skilled team of clinicians and counselors use an individualized approach to meet the needs of each youth we work with. They role model positive social skills and help youth develop effective coping behaviors. Through this process youth recognize their self-worth, the value of their opinion and voice, and feel empower to advocate for themselves.
We combine the positive parenting principles of the Nurtured Heart Approach with the crisis management techniques of Pro-Act and Collaborative Problem Solving to deliver individualized, high quality services focused on strengthening permanent families ties and life long skills.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our Continuum of Care includes a comprehensive range of community-based programs that allow youth and families to access resources where they live. These programs help our clients to process trauma, begin to heal, and build skills to navigate life's challenges. Our Programs are:
Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program: Safe, secure, and stable home environments for foster youth (four 6-bed licenced STRTP homes)
Family Pathways Program: Working together to create connected families
Transition Age Youth Programs: Supporting underserved young adults through the transition into adulthood
Enrichment Programs: THerapeutic activities to enhance the healing process
Therapeutic Behavioral Services: Short-term family based behavioral interventions
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are celebrating 55 years of service to the community this year! From starting out as a small nonprofit providing foster youth shelter in group homes, we are now a mid-sized human service organization serving 300+ youth and families a year with our comprehensive continuum of care. We provide behavioral mental health services, enrichment programing, and much more (see above).
With a new CEO at the helm, we are entering a new era that is taking a strong look at how we can continue to impact the lives of deserving youth, while providing a high-quality of care that is efficient and cost effective. We a focusing more than ever to ensure that our clients and our staff experience a equitable, inclusive, and diverse environment when engaging with this organization. We've set big fundraising goals and are also thrilled to be operating a new Thrift Shop that will help diversify our income and also provide our Transitional Age Youth with opportunities for employment and job training.
