What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Ventilator Weaning
Barlow Respiratory Hospital is recognized for a ventilator weaning success rate of nearly 60%, among the highest in the nation.
Our Barlow TIPS© Ventilator Weaning Protocol was developed by Barlow board-certified pulmonologists based on years of specialized respiratory care practice.
Barlow's Ventilator Weaning Program gives hope to those who are dependent upon machines to take their next breath. The program has achieved outstanding results with patients unable to be liberated from the ventilator, or "weaned," at other hospitals. Using a step-by-step method, implemented and monitored by dedicated respiratory care practitioners, patients move at their own pace through a careful process that supports the recovery of independent breathing.
The only facility of its kind on the West Coast, Barlow is also a leader in the publication and presentation of outcomes research in the post-ICU setting of long-term acute care. Barlow combines the latest research, technology, and cutting-edge therapies with an individualized approach that encourages communication between patients, families and the entire team of health care specialists.
Long Term Acute Care
Barlow Respiratory Hospital is a high-acuity service provider that meets patient needs throughout the transition from ICU to long term rehabilitative care. We are a Long Term Acute Care Hospital LTCH.
Care for Chronically Critically Ill
For patients whose respiratory illness is complicated by a constellation of complex medical conditions, Barlow Respiratory Hospital provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary with intensive treatment and appropriate interventions. Led by board-certified physicians, our Barlow team provides care for chronically critically ill patients. On-site physicians and consulting specialists guide the care of patients with conditions that include cardiac diagnoses, neurological conditions, infectious diseases, kidney disease and blood disorders and complex respiratory care needs.
Respiratory Care Services
Barlow’s Respiratory Care Services Department supports in-patient services at Barlow Respiratory Hospital main campus in Los Angeles and our satellite units twenty-four [24] hours a day, seven [7] days a week. Services are provided to adult and geriatric patients .
Wound Care
Barlow's Wound Care Program helps the overall healing process. Often, difficult-to-heal wounds complicate treatment of other serious conditions including cardiac, pulmonary, neuromuscular, endocrine, and renal diseases.
Care for the Medically Complex Patient
For patients whose respiratory illness is complicated by a constellation of complex medical conditions, Barlow Respiratory Hospital provides comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment and appropriate interventions.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
At Barlow Respiratory Hospital, work is outcomes-driven and focused on achieving the best possible quality of life for our patients. Our expert Barlow team works to ensure each patient has the best quality care while in hospital, and the appropriate support they need to resume fulfilling lives after discharge from the hospital. Barlow Respiratory Hospital is a small, community-based hospital with a long history of specialized respiratory care.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Barlow Respiratory Hospital is a Long Term Acute Care hospital (LTACH) with a specialty in weaning patients from ventilators. We focus on clinical quality in all we do. Our focus is on providing excellent care for our patients and on providing kindness and compassion to our patients and their family members.
Most of our patients are referred to us from traditional hospitals, often from the hospital's intensive care unit. Our patients require heightened levels of treatment and care provided only in a specialized long-term acute care hospital setting. We treat critically ill patients with intensive and highly individualized treatment.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Barlow Respiratory Hospital serves patients with complex medical conditions who are ventilator-dependent, require longer hospital stays and benefit from the highly specialized, expert care provided by our Barlow team. Our expert team of board certified doctors, licensed nurses and therapists, and our administrative and support staff share a common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of our patients and their families.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission. As an accredited hospital, we meet standards for demonstrating quality of care, patient safety, safety of the environment, and we have an excellent associated medical staff.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Because our hospital is small, Barlow is in a unique position to be nimble and respond quickly to changes in the healthcare environment. Today we remain optimistic in the face of challenge and persistent and focused in our pursuit of extraordinary care. For the future, Barlow must be poised to continue to fulfill its mission, and we can only do that by investing in one asset that supports all others: our environment.
Though Barlow inhabits a welcoming, historic facility, the hospital's ability to function is constrained by outdated and inadequate spaces, and a deteriorating and seismically inadequate physical plant. Upgrading our 1927 building is impossible. While we strive to continue delivering extraordinary care that serves both patients and families, our ability to do so is increasingly limited by a lack of physical, functional space that can be put to flexible use.
To that end, we have one realistic option: Rebuild Barlow Respiratory Hospital.
