JUNIOR LEAGUE OF BAKERSFIELD
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our community focus is increasing the "Literacy" rates for the children and women in our community. - 13.9% of Kern County adults lack the basic literacy skills necessary to perform daily job functions (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). - 15% of county adults have not attained a 9th-grade literacy level (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). - 27% of Kern County adults over 25 do not have a high school diploma (U.S. Census 2010-2014 American Community Survey-5 Year Estimates). Kern County California Assessment of Student Performance & Progress Scores dipped in 2020. Across all grades, 43% of Kern County students in 2018‐19, compared to 42% in 2017‐18, met or exceeded the English language arts/literacy standard compared to California’s overall rates of 51%, respectively. As with past standardized tests, sharp differences emerged in county scores of students from low‐income families, English learners, Special Education students, and African‐American and Latino students compared to other students.

The Junior League Community Impact Model stimulates deeper community impact, creates a more engaged Junior League network around community issues, and builds quality learning experiences for members. The issue-based approach to community impact will make the League’s operating systems more impactful including, advocacy, direct service, public education, awareness, capacity building, collaboration, and grant making to sustain impact over a number of years.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Junior League of Bakersfield (JLB) actively seeks to impact the community through direct service programs. Our current impact focus area of "Literacy" reflects our commitment to serving the needs of our community. JLB projects and impact opportunities will focus on improving the lives of women and children in the community by providing volunteers, training, and funding to a non-profit organization in Kern County.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Project and Enabling Fund Grants are awarded to non-profit community organizations for the purpose of improving the welfare of women and children in Kern County. Organizations applying for funds may use a variety of strategies and activities that are consistent with the JLB mission and focus area. The Junior League of Bakersfield actively supports programs in the area of women and child welfare.
In addition, the Impact opportunities in the community for our members also align with the league's focus area of "Literacy."
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Currently, we have about 60 Active members and over 200 Sustaining members who are active with the League and our projects as well as in the community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Junior League of Bakersfield celebrated over 50 years in the community in 2015 by donating a $50,000 grant to the Kern County Museum for the Lori Brock Children's Museum in recognition of the 50th Anniversary.
Since our formation in 1965, women with the Junior League of Bakersfield have given over to $1.8 million back to the community, helped form 200 local nonprofits, and volunteered more than a million hours.

- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
