The Community School of Performing Arts

The Colburn Community School of Performing Arts • The Community School helps meet our city’s need for quality performing arts education through 120 after-school and weekend classes, group and private lessons, in a range of performing arts disciplines. Offerings include Suzuki strings, all orchestral instruments, piano, guitar, voice and choral, small ensemble and orchestra, music theory and early childhood education. The Community School’s Trudl Zipper Dance Institute offers instruction in tap, ballet, jazz, modern and musical theater.

Nearly 2,000 students (age 3 and up) annually nurture their passion for music, dance and drama by studying with Colburn’s esteemed faculty at the Community School.

To help fill the needin our community for high quality performing arts education, each year, the Community School gives over $460,000 in scholarships to approximately 220 low- and middle- income children. The School is often the one place these children can explore and develop their creativity, regardless of their schools’ resources or their families’ financial means.

The Community School is an active member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education, and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, one of just 14 community schools to achieve this honor. Robert McAllister is dean of the Community School.

• The Conservatory is a degree-granting post-secondary institution for the finest college aged musicians from around the world. Each year, up to 120 students are awarded full tuition to study with internationally renowned artists. Colburn Conservatory students consistently take top prizes in prestigious competitions and our top students are invited to solo with top orchestras. In 2015, Colburn’s own Simone Porter won raves for her debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. Our graduates have won positions with numerous notable orchestras, such as the Minnesota Symphony, the Oregon Symphony, and the Seoul Philharmonic.

Four years ago, in response to the arts education inequity that persists in the Los Angeles public school system, Colburn expanded our commitment to our community by developing and launching a Community Engagement initiative focused on in-school and afterschool performing arts education in partnership with 15 Title I elementary schools. The initiative consists of three core Community Engagement programs—Musical Encounter, Summer Encounter and Jumpstart Young Musicians Program—which collectively provide free performing arts education by our esteemed faculty to more than 4,100 underserved children each year.
